paycheck to paycheck? (by harold [MA]) Posted on: Jan 11, 2019 2:19 PM

I'm very surprised to hear how many people are saying that without a paycheck today they will not be able to pay for such things as food, mortgage, pay for gas, credit card payment, children's shoes etc.

Are so many people these days literally really living from paycheck to paycheck? I can understand some jobs that pay very little and only one person working , but they are talking about many if not most federal employees. I would not have thought that so many federal employees are paid so little that they didn't have any cushion and that they are really living from paycheck to paycheck.

What I'm wondering about is do people have such poor money management that they can't have any cushion to live on? Or are people paid so little that they can't afford anything more from week to week living? I understand that some federal jobs may not pay a very high wage or salary, but they get a pretty good benefit package that people like me who get paid perhaps more but I have to pay for those benefits out-of-pocket.

It's a different world out there...today's tenants grew up in a world where both parents worked, bought them anything they wanted and savings? What is savings? And what's a rainy day anyway?

When we moved out of our parents' homes back in the early 70's, we moved with brick and board bookcases, spool tables and milk crates for dining tables, no tv but many of us had stereos of varying quality LOL! Also probably a VW bug or van with no car payments.

Today, EVERYTHING is subscription based. It's a LOAD of monthly bills before you even raise your head off the pillow. --50.82.xxx.xx

Do you really think that the people who are interviewed on TV are representative of the population as a whole? Imagine reporting "news" of someone saying, "It's no big deal. I have enough savings for a couple of months, and I'll get it eventually." Boooring. Not going to make it past the editing room. --204.210.xxx.xxx

Agree with Robin. Not a big deal. There are many ways to get by If there is a problem.

Like I said a few days ago, there are plenty of lenders who will advance money to federal employees. Heck, I'd do it myself.

They drive newer cars than me. They can sell them.

They have cable tv. I dont.

They eat out a lot. I dont.

Cry me a river!

The first month after Christmas there are many people that cannot pay their bills because they have overspent. I've had many tenants over the years that came up short in January, not to difficult to believe that a furlough on top of Christmas leaves a lot of people short. --71.112.xxx.xxx

Good point Ed,but by now the government employees should have figured out that this is the new way and be prepared. The government has shut down every year now for several years at this point. I think this is going to continue happening as long as government bodies are not willing to compromise. --73.120.xx.xxx

I believe Brad has said that 70% of his tenants are on a weekly pay or biweekly type of a pay situation so I think it is pretty reasonable to assume that they are paycheck to paycheck.I think a lot of people are living paycheck to paycheck but it is generally of there own making. If a govt employee was furlowed and out of work they will eventually get that check,if during that time they are out of work they went and found something to do and get paid cash when it all ends they would be money ahead but I doubt hardly any of them are doing anything like that, they are just sitting around complaining. --72.231.xxx.xxx

I can’t believe the “complaining” that these people are out of work and it’s their fault. They work and should get period. They have mortgages, daycare or other expenses. How you decide to spend is a personal choice. Government shouldn’t have a choice to pay or not. Private iindustry doesn’t. --68.192.xxx.xxx

What’s amazing to me is all the co workers of my husband that make really good money being iron workers and welders abd they are living paycheck to paycheck. They ask my husband constantly to borrow money just a couple days after they get paid... I think they live out of their means. --173.26.xx.xxx

Any one of us could lose a paycheck at any time, for a number of reasons. Responsible, smart people plan for that. People spend all they get and don't save for a rainy day or emergency. They even spend more with credit cards. That is where the financial advisers tell people how to cut back that starbucks coffee every morning and take a lunch in order to save some money.

Anyone who is working will get paid for that work at some point. Anyone who is not working can file for unemployment assistance.

A lot of banks and credit companies and even businesses in our areas realize the situation and are helping to get these people through. --108.4.xxx.xx

The advice from the government for landlords to "use their reserves" to help furloughed employees is so irritating on some many levels - one of which is it implies landlords keep reserves but the employees don't so we should give ours to them...

My excuse will be "Sorry but I need the rent to pay for my health care premiums." --50.82.xxx.xx

There is a difference between life and life-style. I think there are many middle and upper class people out there who cannot support their life-style if they miss a paycheck. I think far fewer cannot support themselves at a minimal level. The problem is, they are unwilling to give up their life-style.

This is an unfortunate aspect of being a government employee. Far too often a bunch of big egos (in all branches of government, and on both sides of the aisle) take over, and they decide to just shut down. But these same snowflakes who are crying that Alexa doesn't have enough money to order them caviar and wine this week will get up to 6 weeks paid vacation this year, once the shutdown ends. And then will retire with a pension that we will all pay for, for the rest of their lives. I wonder how many will be criticizing the wasteful pension budgets once they retire? Or how many will complain when they get backpay for all of this time off?

Yup. I have a friend who works for the U.S. Forestry Service and is currently sitting at home working on puzzles. Basically just shrugging and saying, "No big deal - I'll get back to work when it's over, and we have plenty saved in the meanwhile."

But I'd still like to put the prez and all of the congressional leaders in an Escape Room from which they can't escape unless they come to a compromise. Sheesh. --71.175.xxx.xxx

I blame the lack of savings in America on the shift in the coffee market place.

Once upon a time we had these things called coffee cans that housed nuts and bolts in the garage and spare change in the dinning room. Now that coffee cans are plastic, the same sound doesn't occur when you empty out your change into the now plastic buckets.

So how on Earth are we suppose to EVER save a dime without the ability of hearing that metal on metal chua ching sound. If we can't blame it on coffee than we will be forced to look ourselves in the mirror. I am not all that sure we can do that as a Nation. --72.23.xxx.xx

Ha! A guy that thinks most people still get "change" these days!

Sorry, but it doesn't matter what sound change would make -- since most people never get "change" any more.

You may be onto something though -- maybe there is a link to the fact that we just don't have much physical money any more. We used to SEE it, FEEL it. Now it is all digital.

Don't get me wrong -- I LIKE digital -- I pay for most things with my WATCH these days. But, for the younger generation, they never had that "paper money or coins in hand" thing. Everything is virtual to them.

Believe or not we on the exact same wave length.

98% of all money in the US is electronic

Couple that with a greater and greater general attitude immediate gratification, who needs to plan for the future?

I submit -everyone does. But there is culture that someone else will bail us out of the jam that we have self inflicted.

The situation saddens me, as it doesn't seem to be getting any better. I believe in this site because in my opinion, it is all about self help and self sufficiency.

paycheck to paycheck? (by small potatoes [NY]) Posted on: Jan 15, 2019 7:45 PM

Since the recession of 2008ish it has taken a decade for working stiff income to rise, in the intervening time corporations held off on raises to employees and finally had to blink as the economy strengthened and job availability increased. Also think about how todays economy is different than when we were young. A cell phone bill for a family can easily be over $200 month and it is an 'essential' item. Cable, my tenants have multiple boxes for every room, I have an antenna. Car payments, mine paid on cash, but many have monthly payments, plus school loans, etc.. It's easy to see how families get over extended.

I run into similar cash flow issues when there are empty apts and delinquent tenants. Life in the current age is more peacemeal as companies outsource and workers became contractors and consultants who work and get paid by the gig. No matter how you slice it life is harder for the avg American. What about all the govt. contractor employees who are missing income that is not going to be regained? Why does there seem to be so much hate for others in peril? It's not you and it's not made up and it's not all about the 'news'. Go to a local food bank and see what's happening on the ground. The need is there. --24.194.xx.xx

small potatoes(NY),I hear what you are saying and I agree to certain degree. I will start by saying I grew up very poor and remember as a child sitting in a rocking chair at midnight along with my sister singing keeping ourselves occupied while waiting for someone from church to bring us food to eat. My parents got divorced when I was very young and my mother had about a 6th grade education. I lived in a shelter home for a while with my mother and sister and we moved all of the time. I did not realize then but I think now we were on section 8 housing and I remember my mother being on food stamps. We went to church pantries for food and walked a lot and depended on others for transportation. I now think we moved a lot because my mother probably did not pay rent. I was one of those kids that was destined for failure. I made a decision when I was in my early teens that I was not going to live that way. I set a goal in my head that when I was 25 I would own my own home and have a truck. When I was 23 I bought my home I still live in and had two old trucks. I also have antenna tv and I use prepaid phone service for a lot less money than anyone I know. My point is that you can choose your own path and I chose to change my life for hopefully the better. Life can be very hard and I struggle with learning due to lack of life education and no college But I will succeed just at a slower pace. People could live a simpler less expensive life and not have to have all the bells and whistles but THEY CHOOSE a different path. I appreciate people that help the less fortunate as they did when I was young but the reality is my parents should have never had kids if they can not afford them. Maybe it is because I grew up this way that I am good with a simpler life But as an adult have never asked anyone to pay my debt and have always paid my bills early and paid them off early. It just makes me mad that most people don't live responsibly and ask others to bail them out when it is there fault they are were they are. One day I may eat these words but for now I am moving forward and have goals every day not just new years. Bless all of you for your words of wisdom and help!! --73.120.xx.xxx
