Hated for having business (by Duplexer [IL]) Posted on: Apr 20, 2024 1:09 AM
Message:

As someone who has worked all their life and finally is self employed though barely through having rentals- and definitely not rich--- I wonder if anybody else has felt the hate from friends family and the public. It really was quite unexpected, I have to say.

Some friends with regular jobs seem standoffish now if not jealous. Even though they very likely make more than I do. Most family members seem happy to tell me to quit, any time I am having economic hardship and to 'go get a job'. As if I'm not working. I'm here to tell those who havent done it leasing and maintaining property as a low income person.... when you do everything yourself, as well as dealing with tenants and their damage and uncertainty, is work. Its living off your wits and luck. And its not easy.

They say get a job, or "Maybe its time to try something else". That's a favorite line. As if I can just whip up businesses out of nothing. If one, why not ten right.

Most government entities treat me anywhere between unfriendly and outright disdain once they find out I'm in housing and a 'landlord'. Someone living off you and not paying? They want to protect them! You're the bad guy.

Tax boards are particularly ruthless. They seem to see it as you having more than your fair share, so you should be punished.

How does that even work? I may have more than one house, but thats what I am providing! Other people get to live in them and enjoy them. I only get to work and pay to upkeep them, clean, renovate, and pay the bills and taxes. I can't even go in them without giving notice, and then its to repair something right.

The only government entity I've talked to that will give you a fair hearing is the circuit clerks office. And that is because they've heard and seen it all before, and know how it is.

I'm wondering. Is this something particular to being in housing, or is it the same for anyone self employed? Because as far as self employed, I've only ever known this..... though I've worked centuries in jobs and know all the downside of that. Its particularly tough when you don't have the money, but get all the resentment. Or maybe its been different for you.

Maybe you're a minority, and they celebrate your achievements as a business owner? I can tell you as a non-minority, you definitely don't get that, lol.

I'm thinking of a time I told a relative I might have to hock my grandfather clock to pay for a lawyer to fight my property taxes being doubled... and they replied, "Don't hock it.... give it to me."

Isn't that just, a really mean thing to say?

Thoughts and experiences, anyone?

I have not found that. Occasionally as a woman I run into a contractor that responds better to my husband but if that’s the case, I won’t hire them again. I respect those I deal with at the apartments whether it is a tenant, contractor, person installing flooring, person trimming bushes, cleaning crew and they respect me. Occasionally when I hold a tenant to the lease terms they then hate me but that is part of the business. I disagree that it’s luck. I work hard and manage my rentals as a business. I keep a professional tone in all my dealings. Occasionally when things go sideways with a tenant or I’m working a lot at a nasty job, extended family might suggest I should get out. I understand they want think they know what is best for me at times but I hold my course and get through the blip. There are times since I have started in this business that I need to take a step back, reflect on how to handle a situation, shift my business strategy and/or change my attitude. --73.159.xxx.xx

I am with the above. Very few knew at work what I did outside of work. Many feel the rich LL is taking advantage. Some are jealous. I have a few who knew I had property, ask about certain things. Most of the time there was more to the story than they were told originally. For example, one person said a "friend" was given 10 days to go. I said it is 30 days on a MTM here and something wasn't right. Turns out there was an unauthorized person living there. My buddy told me a few days later what the real reason had been. Sometimes people who rent say something and I happen to be in the room and I would put forth the law on it. Got ignored. Whatever.Yep, I am stupid and haven't been doing this for a long time. When asked what I do, I tell them I dabble in construction a bit. Then they proceeded to tell me about this one room that the sheet rocked blah blah blah or they ask me if I have any time to work on a project. Nope. Then after that, I’m quickly at a loss for conversation as they typically drift toward working jobs and buying the latest gadgets/vehicles and taking the trendiest trips. Yep, my own father told me one time I needed to sell the rentals and get a job. To this day, I still cannot understand why he would say that as he started a business himself (not real estate) and was self employed. He would always say that I needed benefits. Never had an answer as to what benefits I needed to be provided that I couldn't purchase myself.

Most of my friends are jealous actually. They see my travel schedule and wish theirs could be the same. What they don't see most of the time is the long hours I put in some weeks to make that travel schedule happen.

I purchased my first rental about a year after I graduated college. I worked a W-2 job along side that for about 20 years. I tell folks now I worked 2 jobs for 20 years so I could work 1/2 a job for the next 20. --45.17.xxx.xxx

People I know and have met seem to fall into a very few classes. Bums, working people, self employed and entrepreneurs.

These groups have their own ideas of what is right and wrong regarding making money, jobs, etc.. They seldom get along well with others in a different group.

As someone in the entrepreneur group, I don't mesh well with the other groups so I keep to myself in sharing with these others. I've found there is no use engaging with them other than courtesy small talk about trivia. They are fully committed to what they think and believe so I let them do their thing. I don't talk much about what I do.

On facebook people like to slam me when I post on anything in a local group. Mostly blue people so they hate my politics and I make sure I mention when appropriate that I am a LL because these are the people who may become my tenants. For example, there is a painter asking for work so I posted to him that I will have work in July for a One br. and the fall for a two br. So everyone else can see that and I may get a tenant from that. My relatives don't hate me because they all have businesses, the ones that are left. Most of them have died. I'm good to the tenants so they don't hate me. --173.61.xxx.xxx

My father used to keep saying that I should sell the properties and just flip all the time. Faster money, less dealing with people and all that.

As I sit here typing this response I am making money with my rentals. It is not all passive, but it is there. I have a few bucks coming in each month even if I have a place open or just don't feel like starting a new project.

People will say something about me having 23 doors. Wow you must be raking in the bucks, or must be nice to not have to do anything any more.

I was hung up on the number of doors I had. I wanted more. Collect them all like Pokémon cards. Then some wise people from here let me in on the secret that it isn't about the number of doors, it is about the money and freedom. I am happy to make more with less and then grow a little as it comes along.

Even talking to other landlords and managers can be tricky. Two people that I talk to quite a bit deal with lower class places than mine. Talked to one earlier in the week who dropped the rents on one side of a duplex because the tenant gave him a sob story and he didn't want to look for a new one. So this place rents for $600. Should be $700 easily but he dropped it to $500.

I fix my places up and raise rents. He just fills them with warm bodies and hopes they pay something.

Then I talk to some of the people on here and can't relate at times. I rent a 2/1 side of a duplex for $700. That same unit in another state, or town even could go for twice as much.

Sometimes it is hard to converse with anyone about the business side. I am just happy that I have the wife in on it. She doesn't always relate to the turmoil of dealing with the tenants, but she gets the number portion for the most part. --107.147.xx.xx

I'm fortunate that four of my siblings are successful entrepreneurs. Each of us has bootstrapped our way to prosperity. We grew up in frugal circumstances, so when we get together nobody is ashamed of their wealth. Instead we brag about who drives the oldest car.

That said, it's hard to have a conversation about what I do. I'm intensely interested in their challenges with employees, lawsuits, marketing, etc. Nobody seems interested in hearing about my battles with groundhogs and unauthorized girlfriends. Hearing you Duplexer! Great question I think we can all relate to. Being a LL is harder than any other job I've had...skills from those jobs prepared me for being a LL. Accounting, sales, human resources, even waitressing. Ya, the harrassment experienced at every job also happens from contractors who either want to sleep with you, put their arm around you or talk down to you.

In the beginning I loved my job as a LL, but the new behavior in the last few years really puts me off. Entitled younger tenants disrespecting me because they're much younger than I (elder abuse, lol). The next renewal, I don't renew them, they don't know why and they're angry. Neighbors that realize I'm a LL trying to get their lowlife, non employed friends or relatives into my places. Prospective tenants asking me how many places I own, how long I've owned them...like, none of your business, I think as I don't respond. And prospects grilling me if I ever give security deposits back. People always wanting us to fix something of theirs because we are in the know! We tell them we'll teach them how, but we won't do it for them. Then they don't want to know us.

When I meet someone, my vocation is not something I ever bring up. I hang with LL friends and here. Safer, and you can vent; they know what you're talking about. Some neighbors in the past said we should stop working so hard and they know how tough it is. And some people are just out of touch.

A different take... if they see your discussion of the rentals as complaining, they may be telling you to get out cuz they want you to be happier.

When I discuss my rentals with family and friends ( they ask) I use it as opportunities to tell funny stories. I'm very comfortable poking fun at myself too, so its not just the things tenants, or the neighborhoods do, its my goofs as well. But, I top it off with short tales of contentment and success. And then turn conversations back over to their interests.

Years ago, ( long before I had the rentals) when I was struggling with depression,/ migraines, I had a harder time being positive, and people just don't like to hear a chronic complainer. But, I got proper treatment, and feel I'm at an even keel. Now, I can use social skills to keep conversations light, funny, uplifting. Everyone asks about my rentals, and I try to have a funny tale at the ready, or just a positive tale. And then we move on to other topics. --72.135.xxx.xx

Being an entrepreneur is a lonely endeavor and this is one of the reasons I really have no friends per se. They can't relate to me nor me to them. I also don't share with family outside of my immediate family for the same reasons. People don't support what they can't relate to and if you have any success, you may have to deal with jealousy and envy. I have enough to deal with, so I'm not looking to add any additional issues. Folks can't get jealous about things they don't know about. No one is going to celebrate your successes but they'll be glad to see you stumble.

What I've learned is to keep my mouth shut and move in silence. I don't talk about business with anyone except those who are in the same business and preferably those who are more successful than I. Folks who are more successful than you are not threatened by you and tend to be helpful as long as you're earnest and not trying to get a free ride. You have to watch it even talking with other investors. I've learned to keep it low key and unassuming.

I agree totally with what NE said. I'm not into small talk. I don't like gossiping about people, buying clothes and cars and that sort of nonsense. I feel people interpret that as being aloof when I'm just trying to avoid clouding my mind with a bunch of nonsense.

People feel that you pocket all the rent which far from reality. Having 39 rental units where it costed $1,000 per day then took a modest salary of $20,000 per year. Never made money on the rent where built equity. My younger sister told me get a job then move out the house which meant turn over everything to her then move into a rooming house absolutely no way. Critics have accomplished absolutely nothing in life where if turned over rental complexes within six months would be bankrupt. It would be like a Cinderella story where the clock struck twelve. During the pandemic seen many of the hate groups where some were arrested for vandalism. Rental housing providers spent less one per cent of time with collecting rent where most days doing renovations, repair appliances, coin laundry equipment, fixing plumbing problems, clearing snow then taking things to the dump that can not be recycled. One tenant in apartment wanted a renovated rental unit below where told him it would be $900 per month where he called me a slumlord. The apartment he lived in was completely trashed out where did not want another completed trashed out rental unit. So he moved to one of those illegal apartments in houses. He was able to work where was on disability. Think about a business that buys goods and services in the local community which is rental housing. Those who are social assistance should be working as they are able to do so. In the world we have one madman who hates the Us where invaded another country then was going to invade more countries until the EU would be part of Russia. I believe that supporting Ukraine is going to help eliminate the axis of evil where once Putin is out then the others will be less likely to cause problems. Take the Island of Socialist paradise where a few blocks from tourist area the housing is failing completely apart where seen when was in Cuba. They do not pay rent or utilities. No money for repairs and renovations. During the Soviet times Russia built oil power generating stations where they do not have the money to run all the time where there are black outs. If not a member of party then have 35 years to get a apartment to live in where as someone passes away bumped up the waiting list. In meantime the party members live kings. --207.236.xxx.xxx

BUSY:A real positive from being a LL for nearly 50 years is meeting my best male friend and family. They have brought pure sorrow and joy to our (hubby and my) lives. Like having a third family. Through the years we've been to family funerals, graduations, kids school programs and his daughter's induction as a police officer. Looking forward to her wedding in October. Known her since she was three. I am forever grateful for those relationships.

One unexpected surprise that stands out through the years. A young female tenant who was moving out at the end of her tenancy and in with her new boyfriend. I really became attached to some as though they were daughters. For my final goodbye I gave her the "be sure he treats you well" talk. She gave me the biggest hug :)

If you are not willing to do that, then I recommend you sell your hobby. The system is going to knock you down, wipe yourself off when you get up and be a stronger person. --24.101.xxx.xxx

Everyone comes with their own ideas of what is right or wrong and lots of people will project their visions (and fears) on to you. --76.242.xx.xxx

Everybody seems to know our business. Small town. Everyone is related to everyone else. I taught school. Last situation---- Non paying tenant told me I was a rich landlord. I reminded her that I drive a 21 year old truck with 350K miles on it. I dont think that they will ever understand what landlords do/go through. And they really dont care. --69.161.xx.xx
