Lifetime Purchases (by wmh [NC]) Posted on: Apr 5, 2024 4:44 PM

Just noticed that Home Depot puts your Lifetime Purchases (or at least, made during the lifetime of your commercial account) on your account page. While the total looks a little shocking, when averaged out per unit per year it's really pennies compared to the rental income. That's nice to know!

Of course it doesn't include everything by a long shot - contractors aren't in there, of course, or Amazon, or Lowes - but still, a majority of our rental repair/renovation dollars are spent at Home Depot. They were the first to grant us a commercial account back in the day, and so earned our business over Lowe's right there. And they keep your records for years and will provide emailed invoices and receipts, and other major record-keeping conveniences.

Just a FWIW, that's all. --173.28.xx.xxx

I had a disagreement with the local HD manager. I brought in my Home Depot credit card statement showing lifetime purchases above $45,000. When he saw that his attitude changed a lot. I was no longer just the weekend Do it yourself repair person. --198.44.xxx.xx

That's good to know. However, I just look at my spread sheet for each property.

Does it cost anything to have a commercial account? --76.129.xxx.xx

6x6, no cost and it's very helpful. In fact you get Early Pay Discounts (not much but everything helps) and they send you Pro coupons and things. They used to have lunches and Pro meetings but haven't had one in a while, probably since 2020...

RR78 It's on the Credit Home tab and it's just under where you can download your statement. There is also a big orange MAKE A PAYMENT button on the right. --173.28.xx.xxx

Our nearest HD is 30 minutes away...so I use Lowes or Menards. I like HD the best, but sadly it's not convenient. Lowes has a similar "card" program...we get 5% off all purchases and what I like best is that you don't need receipts to return things...just have them scan your QR code and it shows all your items purchased. --64.38.xxx.xxx

wnH Thanks for the extra info.

So I went back and looked. Seems my problem is we dont have a actual HD credit card. Never seen my benefit. For the hassle of carrying around an extra credit card.

I just use one of the visa cash rewards cards I have. So I get some discount with that. I just have the pro account and then add a couple of my visa credit cards linked to the account.

I get all the pro perks and get my cash rewards this way. I do carry a Lowes american express since that give a discount at Lowes. It is a American express card so you can even add it to the list of cards in your home depot account. And use that at Home Depot as well. But dont get the cash discount. But do get all the other pro perks.

And can see your purchase history with all cards. Just not the total for lifetime purchases. --73.251.xx.xx

The biggest reason we use the HD cards not and not one of our personal, point-gathering cards is paperwork and trackability. I don't have shoeboxes full of receipts, I have digital receipts in searchable folders. They email me the receipts right from the cashiers terminal, so I get them in real time every day. I download statements in excel format monthly and don't have to separate personal from business.

It's just easier. --173.28.xx.xxx

I have never had them email the receipts. Reading this makes a lot of sense in doing that. I just bring them home, code them and enter them into excel.

No HD close by me. I have an account, no card, and rarely buy from them. They did have a much better deal on a gas cook top over Lowes so I went with them on that. Saved me hundreds.

We also have Menards around here. Not as close as Lowes. I don't get the service from them like I do with Lowes.

I do love swiping the Lowes AmEx card when I buy stuff at other places. It is the card I use for business stuff now. I get a small point offering when I buy from places other than Lowes so it's okay by me. --107.147.xx.xx

That's a main benefit of having their account: no "code them and enter them into excel." I don't have to do that. All receipts have a PO number on them, which we give to the cashier at point of sale. We use the house number and unit. So that is on the receipt and on the statement as well. No typing :) And no missing the smaller ones we might not make the effort to enter sometimes. --173.28.xx.xxx

PS: The best thing about an HD commercial account is you can add a PO number, name or street number to identify why you are making the purchase. Come tax time it makes accounting very easy and if you need to make a return, you can just take your your statement. --198.44.xxx.xx

I like the idea more now.

Using the Lowes AmEx card I have it set for PO number as well. Most times I just say N/A. Especially if I am buying for more than one project.

Truth be told I need to see if Lowes does the same thing with their email or print feature.

I have a small pile of receipts sitting here right now that I plan on entering in the morning. Wouldn't it be so simple to just copy/paste them directly into the excel file.

Thanks again, at this rate we are gonna owe you a dinner at the boot camp this year! --107.147.xx.xx

Zero, don't even have to enter them into excel. You can download monthly statements into excel format and it's all there already. Including PO number and what you bought. --173.28.xx.xxx

Wow, that is amazing.

I'm going to see if Lowes is the same way and have them email me the next time I make a purchase. --107.147.xx.xx

Are you doing this with your Pro extra account or a credit card account? It would be a great tool if they have that hidden somewhere in Pro extra account somewhere. I am spending mid five figures annually for well over two decades. --24.101.xxx.xxx
