Calling BUSY, ROBIN and surrounding Milwaukee area: Any recommendations for asbestos removal/encapsulation? We're at that stage in our project. Yes, looking companies up and BBB but love the first hand recommendations from my cohorts here. Not always trusting reviews that could be fake.

Thanks in advance!

Always have done it myself.

I've only had the asbestos wrap around ends of furnace ducts, some nine inch floor tiles, and possibly in some popcorn texture. I've just worn a good mask, coveralls, and kept a drywall filter in the shop vac. I had bought a special vacuum that was supposed to filter the very fine stuff, but it was a pain to use and then started not sealing well, so dust came out the back. Oi! Scrapped that failure of a tool!

Lots of vacuuming, cleaning, wiping during the process so as to not track it around.

And, if its in good condition, not fraying, I think current recommendation is to leave it. --72.135.xxx.xx

We've been doing what you mentioned (except the fail). I have a HEPA and it's floor tile. We were lucky at one property that we had a furnace replaced where there was asbestos near and when they finished the install it was all gone!!! This is at a rental.

At our house, there is plastic duct taped around it.

Do it yourself. Those who got mesothelioma worked in asbestos mines for years breathing it every day. Use the safety equipment that BUSY mentioned and you'll be fine. --73.2.xx.xx

Asbestos blankets work great for wrapping starters on a Chevrolet V8 when you put headers on. I would just DIY. --76.129.xxx.xx

Oh, Lincoln Contractor Supply for Beannie-doo to remove the mastic under the nine inch floor tiles. I had a house with nine inch tiles over half of basement floor. Many tiles were already loose, most popped off with the slightest nudge. But, the gooey, tar-like mastic underneath! Ugh! The mastic, supposedly, can also contain a lot of asbestos, so I didn't want to try to seal it in.

The Beannie-do worked great. Made from soybeans, it is safe to use, but as it loosens the mastic creates a sludge akin to used motor-oil. First, spread the Beannie-doo, let it sit for a time to soften the mastic, then scrub with a stiff brush. I used copious amounts of old rags to sop up the gooey mess, toss into nearby trash bin. The clothes I wore including shoes, gloves, the tools (scrub brush, garbage bucket, scraper ) were so covered in the oily goo, I tossed them all. Fortunately, I expected this and had old, worn shoes, pants, scrub brushes saved for this job.

Then, there is a cleaner to get the soybean oil residue cleaned up. Don't remember the name. This wasn't nearly as messy. I was left with a fairly clean floor, though some small bits of dark stain remained in cracks. I was planning on painting the floor anyway, and it painted up very well, has held up well.

The name of the mastic remover may have been changed, but they'll know at Lincoln Contractor Supply. --72.135.xxx.xx

BUSY, thanks! I will look for it! We are in a real crunch to get this done and this really helps!!! We were wondering what to put back down afterward so will also look for floor paint. We found a nice one for our basement so that might look nice. Right now the floor underneath is a sort of maroon red. I was thinking more of a grey. What color did you use? --75.11.xx.xx

I found some floor paint at Menards, I think might have been Rustoleum brand. There were two colors available, tan or grey. I didn't quite like either color, so I bought a gallon of each and mixed them. --72.135.xxx.xx
