Fridge time to frost over (by DonV [OH]) Posted on: Apr 3, 2024 10:13 AM

Fridge was not working right because of ice/frost all over. Vent to let cold air from freezer into fridge was frosted shut. I melted and drained it all. I did not have time to check to see if the defrost is working. How often to they defrost themselves? How long do you think it will take to frost over again if the defrost is not working?

I am trying to time my next trip there to be well past 2 auto defrost cycles but before it freezes over and stops working. --74.81.xxx.xx

How a defrost cycle works where a timer and a heating element where the timer turns on heating element then ice melts where water ends up in drain pan in bottom of refrigerator. If know how to use a VOM meter then turn off power then check heating element for continuity. If ok then replace defrost timer. --207.236.xxx.xxx

Look up your model then a defrost time, likey 4-6 hours, some are adjustable with a wiring change, older metal ones can shift gears inside. --184.59.xxx.xx

I just had a problem with fridge sweating inside and ice building up in freezer/coils. We looked at videos of possible repairs. Checked the components and even though defrost thermostat showed continuity (even after placing it in freezer to get it good and cold before testing), it was bulging and it said to replace. I found one on ebay for 8 bucks (new) everything is China anyways.

Knock wood, that is what it seems to be, been running for a week now and water is accumulating in defrost pan and no sweating inside.

The defrost t-stat (switch) is the first thing I check as long as when you defrost it the water goes down and into the pan. If not then you have a blockage in the drain.

If those two things check out then check the timer. Advance it manually until it starts the cycle and wait until it stops. If it doesn't stop that is a good indication the timer is bad.

Dealing with this right now on a fridge I pulled to save time. --107.147.xx.xx
