Woman says judge refused to evict squatters in her house to avoid them being homeless over Christmas — while she was homeless

Carlos Garcia ~3 minutes

A woman says that squatters moved into her home while she left the state and when she tried to have them evicted, a judge allowed them to stay at the house in order to keep them from being homeless over the holidays.

Terri Boyette told NewsNation that she had left her home in Texas in order to go take care of her sick mother in Florida when her neighbor called her and asked her if she knew that someone was living in her home.

Boyette called police, but they told her that since the squatters had potentially been at the home for more than ten days that she would need to start the process of eviction.

That process took eight months, and when she regained access to the home, she said it was thoroughly trashed and her appliances had been stolen. She also realized that the culprits were people she had previously hired.

“I hired them to do some painting and renovating. I was gonna be gone for about three weeks, so I told them to stop work. Apparently one of them broke in and decided to rent it out to other people using drugs,” Boyette told NewsNation.

“They stole all of my items, from the dining table to the entertainment center," she added.

"It's insanity."

Even worse, when the time came to evict the squatters, Boyette said a judge refused to do so ahead of Christmas to avoid them being homeless over the holidays, even though it meant Boyette, the owner of the house, was without a home.

“She extended the appeal to January because she didn’t want anyone to be homeless over the holidays, and I’m like — I’m homeless over the holidays,” she said to the New York Post.

Boyette said that she found crack pipes in her oven and hypodermic needles in a drawer.

“This is the craziest thing I’ve ever been through," she added. "It’s insanity."

In an update on her TikTok account, Boyette said that her insurance company was trying to avoid paying out the claim because she had not filed a police report. She said she had the police tell the company that they would not file a report over a civil matter.

I guessed Austin, but it's looking like it was Mesquite? They never explicitly named her community, but a few of the articles cited reaching out to the MPD for comment.

Texas needs to jump in with the few other states passing squatter laws.

Our very city government here in the Los Angeles area had a 4 year restriction on eviction for non-payment of rent. Including tenants, sub-lets and squatters. I have personally lost $630,000 in rents and spent over $100,000 in attorney fee's. On top of that the City takes bribes so that Commercial businesses that do harm to residential landlords or there property can not:

a) File a police report that is taken seriously or isn't "lost".

b) File reports with the Department of Motor Vehicles about company trucks doing multiple hit and run's.

I am owed over 1/4 M in property damage by corporations that pay money for elected officials companion funds, that in turn try to arrest or intimidate me.

Forty Five years providing safe and affordable housing to the poor means nothing. The last 4 years have cost me $10,000,000 in equity loss and $1,000,000 out from my retirement accounts to keep things going.

The City has altered documents in their favor, did massive witness tampering and pass the buck on to others, never taking any responsibility.

Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are about to have a major remodel by this contractor. A $750,000,000 loss from them is on par with my losses. --47.155.xx.x

Seem like discrimination if the judge doesn't and a violation

of church and state? --73.126.xx.xxx

Who are the lawmakers that decided if someone was in a home X number of days they could stay?

Thinking...What if I send a letter to MY name at my state representatives' home address, can I show them how easy they made it to declare residency?

Brad that is a great idea. Work up a form letter of sorts and I will mail my name as well.

Maybe if they see that more than one person cares about this they will consider changing it. --107.147.xx.xx

I have never understood the signage.

Here if someone is trespassing they get a warning if no sign is up and easily seen (or a purple paint stripe).

If someone is on your property they are obviously trespassing but without a sign they get one free go at it. Makes no sense why the sign has to be there.

I have often wondered about this. I get it with say a big wooded area. Signs go up at your property line as a warning.

My father has an abandoned place the next county over. We stopped by one day at random and there was a truck with a couple guys there. Called the police. They knew the guys were up to no good, but no signs so they let them go and told them if they got caught there again they would get trespassed.

Can't get him to sell the place. But that is another story in itself. --107.147.xx.xx

Hummmm I wonder if you put up a no trespassing sign if you THOUGHT someone was squatting Taking a photo, of it and one father away,..with something that might prove the date,* as well as all sides of the property to show you were just taking random pics of your property with maybe another at a any entrance, yes they will be taken off buy the squatters but you have evidence that the signs were there,..

Dirty pool? Yeah but the squatters are playing it much worse,

* not sure what hat might be,.in an apt I would take a pic of a newspaper but that would look too obvious in this case --73.126.xx.xxx
