Hidden room (by MikeA [TX]) Posted on: Apr 1, 2024 4:23 PM

Doing some work on a stairway to a condo built in 1978. The stairway has a landing halfway up and the top half makes a 180. Under the top half is a coat closet but the bottom half and the landing are closed off and have been since the place was built. I have the riser off on the bottom stair. I can see at least a couple of boxes one looks like it’s wooden in there but I haven’t cut a hole in the closet to check it out. Would you bother cutting an access hole in a closet to inspect or not? Any guesses on the contents of the boxes?

Yes, I would access that. That’s one of my favorite things about remodeling old houses. No, I would not tell a soul if I found anything of value. --24.152.xxx.xx

Sometimes a space is closed off for a chimney or wiring where can check out then if there is space shelves can be installed along the wiring or chimney can be covered up. Behind the bathtub removed all the drywall then installed shelves where that space is now useful. --207.236.xxx.xxx

You should be able to get a better look by pulling a few more risers higher up. If not, you can always pull a few treads. I wouldn't cut drywall unless you're committed to converting it. FWIW, I converted that area in my home and it's handy. There's a lot of cubic feet of storage in there. --73.2.xx.xx

No,I would not.I do a lot of cleanouts on houses i buy full of junk and tell the guys working for me shopping, i call it shopping when they go through the junk. the money is made doing the project not digging through the junk --74.77.xx.xx

I would totally get in there and see what it Is. Why not have a little fun with this crazy profession of ours.

Don’t get your hopes up, though. Probably worthless.

And I’d convert it to storage when done. Amazing how handy just a few extra shelves or a little closet can be. --108.52.xxx.xxx

Same as Mat. Go for it, then convert the space. Please come back and tell us what you find and what you do. --76.129.xxx.xx

Yes, let us know what you find Mike.

A realtor friend of mine found $3000 in an outbuilding of a property she purchased. --75.11.xx.xx

That's cool, at my fire building when I was working on the basement level the hvac contractor punched through a wall to make the duct pop outside. The space was the original basement stairs before the building was converted to Apts. Lo and behold there's something in there. It was a toilet someone couldn't be bothered to throw away.

Drywallers have a bad rap for sealing cups of pee in walls and such since they are paid by the piece and stopping to go, costs them money. You might find some crp in the box. --172.59.xxx.xxx

Oh, yeah - I would definitely check it out.

Then make it accessible storage space. I hate wasted, dead space.

Perhaps camouflage the entrance (not a regular-looking door), so it is a hidden room.

I think those are SOOOO cool, and would love to have one myself --68.229.xxx.xxx

My sister has two stories with hidden spaces. One, they found a jar of old silver dollars boxed into a space. Nice find. Same house, old, old house, that was reported by her, her husband and the kids to be haunted; frequentlysaw an image at top of the stairs, and things went missing. There was always an oddly thick space between kitchen and living room. Finally, they decided to investigate why numbers didn't add upp. ( house was this big outside, but rooms were smaller.) Found a walled up closet, complete with coat hangers on the rod. Old photo album up on the shelf. And, in that photo album? Pictures with labels and dates of the ghost they'd seen, and his family. Of course my sister investigated the history. Nothing sinister, but then she knew who to ask when something went missing. And, nobody saw him at top of stairs anymore. Or so I heard.

Never found much in my rental house wall, except the bloody carving knife that was deposited in a wall cavity and hole patched. Police weren't interested. Hmfph! --72.135.xxx.xx

Busy you just reminded me that DH found a buck knife - a perfectly good one - in a wall. We wondered if it was evidence of some kind...I wonder if we still have it? --173.28.xx.xxx
