Come To Think of It (by mapleaf18 [NY]) Posted on: Mar 30, 2024 1:03 PM

At the local LL meeting the other night with guest speaker Mr. Attorney letting us know all the anti-landlord laws there are out there and warning us "you better not chance this or that," it dawned on me that Mr. Attorney wasn't particularly grieved over the situation as most LLs sitting in attendance were. He wasn't shaking his head in unison with the LLs who were disgusted by their property rights being slowly chipped away.

No, in fact he had a big grin on his face most of the time. And it seemed to me that the more anti-LL laws there are out there, the more complex it becomes and the more $$$$$$$ for attorneys and local governments who are actually preying upon the fear of LLs violating one of their arcane rules/laws.

Let's face it, most politicians are attorneys as they sit in their ivory towers making laws that won't ever cause them a night's sleep. And so are their relatives. All hail the Oligarchy!

NE, not finally, I've always had this opinion since the days of listening to Dear Rush back in '88 where any leftist tendencies I had were completely vanquished (that and working as a clerk for subsidized housing) but this sealed the coffin. --64.246.xxx.xxx

Same with tax laws. A whole industry who doesn’t DO the work, but reports on the work of those who build, create, bake, serve.

A year or two before the last tax law changes, I’d decided to simplify. Just MACRs depreciation, simple clear cut rules. Did that for one or two years. ( no, didn’t submit form asking for change in accounting procedures.) As the 2017 tax laws changed, I took a look at all that and thought , heck, think I need to stick with my simplified version.

The amount of reading, researching, or paying a professional for my paltry amount of rentals doesn’t justify getting too excited about tax laws, or tenant-landlord laws. I follow the concept of ‘treat people respectfully and fairly’. Works for me! --72.135.xxx.xx

The most important elections are local, they say. I remember having a discussion with a French man once and he was shocked by our election process. They vote, yes, but only for the top tier. The rest are all appointed officials. We vote all the way down to dogcatcher.

And Sisco's comments are right on. --173.28.xx.xxx

The reality is that 0.01 per cent of the extreme leftist never had a job or business where they only show hate for those who worked hard then accomplished something. If a apartment complex was turned over them within six months it would like a Cinderella story where the clock has struck twelve then the apartment would deteriorate. It is easy to be a critic when they nothing to show for themselves. Los Angeles is example how homeless has increased where a lot of high paying administrative jobs for high pay have been created where that money could have been used to help tenants with rent then build more rental units. In a socialist economy those at the top are living the high life where Australia they bought luxury electric vehicles to be concerned about environment that cost $150,000 each where could have bought three times that more vehicles. Oh labour governments for the workers really. --207.236.xxx.xxx

Sisco makes a great point that is often overlooked. I read somewhere that we have around 2 million federal employees (not including post office and military) and only a couple thousand of those jobs are elected or appointed by someone who is elected. The vast majority, something like 99%, do not answer to voters. We tend to think the laws we live under are determined by elected representatives, but the vast majority of what governs your daily life does not come from laws written by elected officials - it comes from regulations issued by various agencies, bureaus, etc. Think of things like auto fuel economy standards or lead paint remediation regulations as examples. State government is similar, with only a very small percentage of state employees being elected or appointed by someone who is elected. --108.52.xxx.xxx

The problem with the civil serpents is that for far too long they’ve been after your rights and wallets, but given their insatiable nature, they’ll soon be crossing the threshold of your value systems. It’s just a matter of time before you’ll have to make decisions of whether or not you follow certain rules. --24.152.xxx.xx

The Civil Serpent system is what keeps Permanent Washington i.e. the Deep State in charge. It should be revamped and agencies booted out of being clustered in DC then scattered all over the country.

I heard in the White House when there is change in the president that staff at White House does not change where it is job until retirement. That way a smooth transition when there is new president. Generally here government jobs are more secure along with much better benefits then in the private sector. --207.236.xxx.xxx

The first job of an atty is to protect his reputation, then his office group, then billable hours. Fighting for MY interests is somewhere down the line.

First job of a politician is to be re-elected. Do that by keeping the people WHO VOTE happy thinking you are working for them with handouts. LLs are a minority, and don't give contributions, so not critical to re-election.

1) Attorneys will make sure the folks capable of paying the billable hours are informed and how they are being wronged - in hopes that some of that money is rolling towards them.

2) I taught that there were three branches of government but the reality is there are actually four. Executive Branch, Judicial Branch, Legislative Branch and the bureaucracy (those life long civil servants) --24.101.xxx.xxx
