Babysitting adopt baby (by Liz Whitestone [CA]) Posted on: Mar 25, 2024 12:57 PM
Message:

I have a tenant who just had a baby and is struggling to take care of it. Would it be a conflict of interest for me to offer to watch the baby after work. She has asked me to adopt her baby, could I get in trouble as a property manager

Do you work for someone else who is the property owner? If so, ask them if it would be a problem. On the face of it, it sounds like you would be doing the tenant a kindness.

Also, suggest not using your whole name to post on an online forum. --98.210.xx.xxx

If your the landlord, I would want too but would not as what do you think would happen if the baby died of sids in your shift. Or if anything happened like a disgruntled baby daddy shows up and kidnapped the baby. What would happen ? --172.59.xxx.xxx

Liz, please do not do this. I understand your heart to want to help the baby and the Mom and I applaud your desire, but this is not wise.

What would you think about any of these ideas?

Send her some diapers, wipes, etc anonymously; reach out to some local churches and see what they offer; reach out to your local pregnancy crisis center and see if they have any classes they offer; call your local social services office and see what they offer; reach out to a local pediatrician and see what resources they might be able to recommend; reach out to your local high school and see if they offer any parenting classes or something similar; reach out to a government sponsored day care (here in Texas, we have Head Start), and see if they have any ideas; reach out to an adoption agency and see what they might be able to offer.

In our Resident Welcome Home binder, we give lists of names and numbers of social agencies that might be helpful for our Residents. (Thank you, Jeffery for the idea!)

Perhaps you could put together something similar and give to your Resident.

She is overwhelmed, most likely sleep deprived and on a hormone roller coaster and is unable to think clearly. Often simply pointing out different options will be a huge help.

I wish you all the best! --12.196.xxx.xxx

It’s hard to tell from your post what the issue is. Is she struggling mentally, financially, or just needs an occasional break? Are you trying to help so she keeps paying her rent or for the sake of the baby? I don’t see any good coming from your watching the baby. I think the better choice is to figure out what the issues are and try to help connect her to the right organizations that could help. Going from property manager to friend/babysitter/etc could go bad in any number of ways. --73.159.xxx.xx

What happens when the media gets involved? You would be the landlord who stole the child from the tenant. I would like to tell you that it is a conflict of interest but that is an understatement --24.101.xxx.xxx

Only rent to people you are willing to evict.

I heartily agree with Renne's comments about the mother being distressed - post partum blues, hormones, abandoned by baby-daddy or family, lack of income...

I'm ok with giving her referral for a sitter.

Google for an adoption lawyer if you WANT to adopt. 2 of my grandchildren are adopted.
