Anyone care to share some of the most stupid, crazy, dangerous things you've seen people do (or done yourself )?

Yesterday as I arrived & parked at H Depot, there in front of me were a couple of people loading a pickup with lumber. I sat watching them for a while, just shaking my head.

The tailgate was down, with a stack of OSB in the bed. Balanced between the back edge of this stack and the back edge of the roof was a bunch of lumber - about 10 2x6s. A steep downward angle toward the tailgate. Nothing under the ends of them - just hanging in the breeze.

You know that plastic, fishing-wire type stuff that H Depot provides for tying stuff down? That is what they were wrapping around the stack of lumber & tying to the truck. Counting on that to hold it while they bounced down the road?! They secured it to the tailgate hinges - not exactly the strongest anchor point.

I just couldn't stop watching and shaking my head. I thought about talking to them and suggesting they go back inside and buy a cheap ladder rack - but I didn't.

I thought about talking to them and offering to carry it on my ladder rack, if it wasn't too far - but I didn't.

They wouldn't listen anyway, and I figured they would soon be learning an important lesson on their own.

I thought about following them, just to watch (lol) - but I didn't.

I did take a picture - I'll put it in my picture page, in case anyone wants to gawk : )

Another similar one: several years ago I was behind a pickup full of lumber - stacked flat in the bed, with the tailgate down, but NOT secured. This I discovered when the light turned green, the pickup driver hit the accelerator, and the load slid off onto the road in front of me. (eye roll).

I look forward to hearing some of your stories.

I'm sure Robert J (CA) has a bunch!

My dad once tied some lumber on the roof of his car. He drove slowly home but reached a big hill - a bridge - and when he went down the other side the whole load slid off the top - in front of him. So at least he didn't kill someone else so it was funny instead.

My husband was transporting a dryer to the dump. The bridge he had to cross was never properly finished and it was like riding a galloping horse to drive over it at speed (if you've ever ridden a horse you'll know what I mean.) The dryer bounced right out of the trailer...no one behind him, luckily.

(they have since redone the bridge.) --173.18.xx.xxx

Many, many years ago hubby and I drove to the local gas station gas up and air up our tires. We watched as we waited for the young women in front of us to air up her tires. The tires started out low, she was pushing on them to test how full they were. When she put the air nozzle on, we could hear the loud hiss as air escaped-she hadn't seated the nozzle on properly! More pushing and poking on tires, more attempts to f'fill' tires, more air hissing as it escaped out of tires.

More pushing on tires, more air hissing, car was getting lower. Tears were streaming down our faces by this time.

We were laughing so hard we couldn't speak, could barely breath ourselves. I tried to regain my composure to offer help, but before I had calmed down from laughing hyena state, she got in the car and wobbled off. Woble, wobble, wobble.

We still get a chuckle when we recall that helpless peer. It was a nice sports car too. --72.135.xxx.xx

We once saw a tractor-trailer hauling a yacht...it was in front and to the right of us. The yacht did not appear to be solidly secured - it was lifting up a bit at the bow.

As we all went under a bridge, the yacht caught the bridge and shattered into a million pieces...no one was hurt and I don't think the bridge was harmed but the boat shattered like glass. --173.18.xx.xxx

When we were young and poor, someone offered us a free queen bed. All we had to transport it in was a sub-compact car. We tied the box spring on to the top (we thought securely) and headed home on the freeway. We got up to top speed, heard a "snap" and looked back to see the box spring sailing off the top of the car into the lane behind us.

We were mortified. The heavy traffic made it too dangerous to pull over and try to drag it out of the way of oncoming traffic, so we just kept going. I feel bad about it to this day, but I didn't know what else we could have done! --104.230.xxx.xxx

I was leaving Lowes lumber yard section. This was November of 2017. Car in front of me (Toyota Pruis) had some 12 foot 1x6 boards and some grey non-metallic conduit passing thru the rear driver side window and then the front passenger side window.

The guy nearly hit the guard house. I checked my stuff then followed him thru the parking lot. He proceeded out onto the main road and drove down it like he owned it.

Was going to follow but figured I had more important things to do rather than wait for a police report to be filled out. They did put a red flag on one end... as if that would help any at all.

Had to look up the pics I took to get all the info correct. My mind isn't that good. --107.147.xx.xxx

Zero we used to own a Prius and have passed long materials like pipes through the hatch at the back up between the seats and through the passenger window.

We once had to haul a huge load of barn board from West Virginia to Virginia (we were building kitchen cabinets.) We had a *tiny* Toyota pickup. DH DIY'ed it so that the wood was all on the passenger side - it went from stem to stern, cantilevered somehow. I was trapped and had to climb in or out through the driver's seat. I worried all the way home about tipping over (it was a lot of wood LOL!) --173.18.xx.xxx

One of my kids brought a tiny roadster back after being stationed overseas, in one of the left side of road countries. So driver sat on the right. They needed to get some plywood, a couple of pieces about , oh, 2-3' wide by 4-5' long. Had Home Depot precut it to size. They put the top down, and the passenger sat with plywood sticking up in front of her way up past windscreen. Driver, sitting on the right, had a clear view, except for the tiny sliver that was the edge of the 2 pieces of plywood. But that's Ok, my son is tall, and he's well used to popping down to look under the frame for the front window to see traffic lights when he has the soft top up. Without the soft top up, he just looks over the windscreen, like any tall guy would do in a roadster. So, he made sure he could see.

They drove home slowly, carefully, had planned their route out ahead. No highways. People who drove past were losing their minds. One guy followed them quite a ways, hollering, threatening with the cops. A few moments later, they, and the other driver, drove past a cop. My son, being former military, offered a quick salute. Received one back. Not doing anything illegal. But other drivers lost it. They for sure thought the driver had the plywood in front of her. --72.135.xxx.xx

I was behind one of those maserati pickup drivers started out of home depot with a bbq grill, it tipped out behind a guardrail, I circled back - waited about 30 minutes of rock-n-roll songs thinking the maserati driver would come back, assessed what was really there - one rack stayed in the other truck, I loaded it up and my daughter has had at least 15 cookouts since, the little rack for toasting buns went with the original owner. I have seen plenty of the lumber spills but I ussually stop and help them, talk about our landlord group if they are doing rental house repairs, drywall does not recover well once it is on the ground. --184.59.xxx.xx

Oh lord, seriously? You want me to list all the stupid, crazy, dumb things I've done in nearly 68 years? OK, go get a pot of coffee, cauze we're gonna be here awhile... ;)

OK, one Home Depot story from a few years ago. I try to park in the covered "pro" area by the lumber entrance so the car doesn't get cooked in the sun while shopping. So I was heading into the store and I see these HD guys starting to load a PALLET of concrete pavers into the back of a pickup with a forklift.

I watch the bed go, down, down, down. Until it hit the bump stops. Then the tires started flattening. I was waving my arms yelling, "STOP! STOP! STOP!" They stopped before blowing them off the rims. I don't know how heavy a pallet of pavers is, but it's way more than an F150 on street tires can carry.

When I pointed this out there was some head scratching. "Well gollly Gomer, who wouldda thunk that?" Neither the HD guys or the buyer had considered the weight limits of the truck or tires. Apparently they get no training in loading vehicles.

We were just pulling out and go to the bottom of the hill exiting when the sky let loose with a blinding rain storm. We got stuck at the light because we couldn't merge into traffic and get level. The water into the front of the truck was unstoppable. We had to push the planks as far back as we could to get it off the front dash and keep the water from flooding front dash and all the electric stuff. --108.239.xx.xx

If you want some good belly laughs, go to a Facebook Page called "Needles Underpass."

It's run by a friend of mine who lives next to a low, one way railroad bridge in Needles, CA., about 30 miles from our place. They have a Ring camera set up 24 hrs on the bridge to capture all the idiots who hit it.

The bridge is only like 7'6" high. Very low. They installed a giant pipe warning barrier, with signs everywhere. Someone hit it the very first day.

Last one I saw a few days ago, was some guy with a refrigerator in a pickup. People are simply brain dead and forget what they are doing. The fridge (not even strapped down) hit the pipe, crashed down onto the tailgate. The truck stopped. Then continued on thru now that the refer was low enough. And probably all dented up...

Rental motorhomes are always the best. And Uhaul trucks. ;)

LOL

PS If you do check it out. The "grafitti" on the underpass is actually repainted each year as a graduation project for seniors at the local high school. --47.216.xx.xxx

Years ago when hardie board was something new I had a load of the 12" wide planks in my truck with the tailgate down (those things are 12' long). Driving to the jobsite I hit a bump in the road and it sheared off my load at the tailgate. Fifty 3 foot pieces of hardi plank slid across 4 lanes of traffic completely blocking a very busy road. Boy was I embarrassed as I quickly picked up the pieces.

Some of you mentioned ladder racks. One that didn't turn out so well. When I was in college I was on a date with a young lady I was trying to impress by treating her to a nice diner in KC. A pickup in front of us with a ladder rack lost an unsecured long fiberglass ladder on the interstate at 70 MPH. It entered the windshield in the car in front of us and decapitated the driver. That image still haunts me today. The young lady with me was traumatized and we never spoke again after that night. I always stop and offer help to someone that doesn't have a load secured, it can be a matter of life and death. --209.205.xxx.xx

However, in the parking lot you are able to watch plenty of folks do lots of stupid stuff. Why so much stupid stuff, well if you go there early to get a good parking spot, that means you are not leaving for a while after the game. That is alright as we would grill something during the pregame and then eat subs after the game.

I once saw some folks get done grilling with charcoal grill and put that in the trunk without emptying that thing out. That is a mishap just waiting to happen if the grill would spill over.
