I was looking for a box of light bulbs at the box store yesterday, and I realized they had stopped carrying my halogen light bulbs, which I'd switched to after they stopped manufacturing the incandescent light bulbs.

It turns out, they're no longer manufacturing halogens, either. I was super-disappointed, because I have terrible luck with LED lights. I have a 20% failure rate on the light fixture with built-in LEDs... which is super-obnoxious, because they're supposed to last from 25-40 years, but end up failing in less than a year, in 3 years, in 5 years... And I had enough LED lights not work with my fixtures, and just break, that I stopped buying them, because it was too expensive to spend $5 on a bulb that lasts for one flip of the switch.

I'm sitting over here in my dinosaur corner, wishing for my washing machine, my hot water heater, and now my light bulbs to be able to go back the way they used to be... :) --137.118.xx.xxx

You need to revisit and embrace LED bulbs. You can get an 8 pack of 60 Watt equivalent bulbs on Amazon for $11.61. That's about $1.50 per bulb. The prices have come down a lot. I also think they have improved the reliability. In my own home I used to change at least one incandescent bulb per week. I can't remember the last time I had to change an LED bulb.

They take far less power and don't heat up a room. Halogens run very hot and can be a fire hazard.

Larry you can't see by a 60 w 'equivelent' led bulb, and my experience mirrors Deanna's. Leds fail way more than legacy lightbulbs, not to mention the ceiling fixtures are no longer bulbs but non replaceable assemblies which also fail. And led bulbs dim. Costco has had good prices this year.

I ran into the halogen problem looking for a range hood bulb, all the leds were as dim as a night light. At least make a better variety of high equivalent special purpose bulbs. --172.58.xxx.xxx

I enjoyed getting warmth and light from incandescent bulbs. Reading by the light of one means that if it gets chilly in the room the bulb will warm you and you won't have to kick up the heat. Obam did that. It's also easier to photograph a dog spirit in incandescent light, flash off, after sundown. Yes, that is what I said. I have some photos sent to me by a dog owner on my facebook page. But the audacity of that man to take our bulbs and give us flimsy mercury filled twisty bulbs which were expensive, could not hold a shade, and stunk when they went bad. At least he was stopped from bringing Ebola victims here from around the world. That cost him the house and senate. --173.61.xxx.xxx

In the house all the light bulbs are LED except incandescent in gas stove as heat is very high where doubt a LED would handle heat. Most light bulbs come from Asia where they stopped importing all light bulbs with a filament. In the province of Ontario the cost of electricity is high where they shut down all the coal fired generating stations then installed gas turbines for the peak times as Candu nuclear plants can not brought up for peak times. Stove, demand water heater and clothes dryer use natural gas. It is matter of time before they stop selling top load washing machines along low efficiency hot water tanks. In the province of Ontario can not buy a standard efficiency gas furnace where the minimum 96.1 AFUE which is high efficiency. --74.220.xxx.xxx

I love the LED bulbs with their bright light, but they do not last nearly as long as the old incandescent bulbs. Often they last less than a year, but then a different one will last for years. There is no predicting how long they will last.

I hated the curly bulbs, so good riddance to them.

I would not buy a light fixture with built-in LED because when the light fails, you have to replace the entire fixture instead of just the light bulb. I sure hope that it doesn't become the only option. --76.178.xxx.xxx

Light bulbs have an “expiration”.

If you will look at the package, it states how many hours it will last.

It is the average time, but when one fixture will go out, it is a big chance that the others will follow. If you did renovations on the house and put all new fixtures, they might start to come out at the same time.

The manufacturer can make bulbs last longer, but must follow the standards. --174.216.xxx.xx

Sigh. Read this Allym: From the EPA website.

How the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 Affects Light Bulbs

Inefficient Light Bulbs are Being Phased Out

Basics of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, as it pertains to lighting and light bulbs:

It does not ban the use or purchase of incandescent bulbs.

It does not ban the sale or manufacture of ALL incandescent bulbs, just those common household incandescent (and other) bulbs that are not energy-efficient.

It does not require the use of compact fluorescent bulbs.

It requires about 25 percent greater efficiency (that is, 25 percent less energy use) for household light bulbs that have traditionally used between 40 and 100 watts of electricity.

Many bulbs, including specialty bulbs, three-way bulbs, chandelier bulbs, refrigerator bulbs, plant grow lights and others, are exempt from the law's requirements.

It was passed by Congress and signed by President George W. Bush in 2007 and is implemented by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

.....

Get your recollections fixed. It's not gaslighting. Its you.

LED lights have been mixed results in my use. The new lights with non-changable lights are the worst. After the LED burns out you have to throw it away and buy a new light fixture. Had bought one new from the big box store, you all know where the package said that it would last 40 years (and save me all kinds of money). One lasted 6 months, took it back and got a refund, another time burned out in less than 3 years, and the store said there is only a 1 year warranty and that I'd have to contact the manufactor (in China).

When we used incandescent bulbs they cost 0.25 and were almost all made in US. Sylvania had a plant in PA. Now the LED bulbs are all made in China and cost at least $5 a bulb.

We remodeled a rental to resell and replace 47 light fixture with new LED. Several failed immediately after installation --152.208.xx.xxx

I bought a small quantity of LED fixtures to use in the rentals. Then I started hearing the horror stories and decided not to use them. I have some in staircases that I was using before everything went cheap. They have all lasted so far. Those are the only lights that I would change for tenants as they are difficult to get to.

I did put a lot of LED fixtures in my daughter's house. All going fine so far, but it hasn't been that long. I figure that when they start to fail I can replace with the stuff I bought already or we can go find a fixture to put bulbs in.

Have a LOT of LEB bulbs. Too many probably. Not all are made alike. Some give off interference to things like radios and such. Especially if the fixture isn't grounded it seems.

Still like them better than the CFLs. I don't see how the energy savings evens out the costs right now, but I was buying in bulk at auctions and Restores so I saved money that way. --107.147.xx.xxx

We've been changing out traditional bulbs for LED's throughout our properties for 5+ years - residential, commercial, and self storage - interior and exterior. It pays!! There is a significant savings on running LED vs. traditional Edison bulbs, halogen, flouresent, MH or HPS. We've seen great savings on our electric bills, many times the bulbs paid for themselves.

We sourced from an electrical supply house for the specialty lamps where our utility (Ameren) had discounts available to make the cost low. For A-bulbs we buy at Home Depot or Amazon but only major brands (usually Cree). Our failure rate has been very low and by buying bulk packs the cost per bulb is low. Prospective and current tenants comment on how nice and bright our units are so I think it's a better image. --66.116.x.xxx
