Any tips from those who have smoke conditions regularly? I have a yard full of trees and they are filtering it and creating oxygen. I am advising others to cover windows with bed sheets and small pet cages with wet rags to stop smoke penetration. Also this morning an article on Twitter from Canadian source. Some of the Nova Scotia fires were set. Remember the balloons that flew over our country recently? I am afraid this may be some of the nontraditional warfare that China uses. westernstandard.news/news/police-in-ns-say-some-fires-deliberately-set/article_d1b2002e-03b4-11ee-a186-13afdb8ce6ce.html?utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=user-share --173.61.xxx.xxx

There are forest fires in the province of Quebec, Nova Scotia and Alberta where the military was called in to help along with help other provinces and jurisdictions outside Canada. As a result of climate change it is getting warmer here where less rain which has a effect on the forests here. Winters are less severe along summers temperatures reached highs never seen before where some provinces experienced highs of 40 degrees Celsius which never happened in the past. As result of the situation in the EU there are starting to use more coal fired electrical generating stations. The Eu is importing natural gas through liquid natural gas where starting to stock up for the winter. The EU is looking further away for coal and natural gas. So more situations like this are going to the norm where more forest fires, very hot weather. --74.220.xxx.xxx

Jim, my yard has smoke in it. I and my pets are in it. That's why I am asking. It's pretty much not getting into the house. I taped along the front door opening, pulled the curtains across the windows, shut the doors upstairs so the hallway is clear of smoke. I still have plastic on the windows from winter as it has been cool here. I have a large piece of egg crate stuck into the exhaust fan over the stove. There is another big cloud of it on the way so they are saying it will be worse overnight. Tomorrow the warning level is supposed to move from red back to orange. This house has lots of places where cold air drafts in. Has beamed ceilings which basically means more exposure where the second floor meets the brick wall. Has gambril roof so second floor is really an attic. Any tips appreciated. --173.61.xxx.xxx

Hi Allym, Out here in Colorado we've experienced several summers of smoke, from fires in California, Arizona, Colorado, and we had some from the Canada fires.

My advice if you'd like to do more than you're doing now is to get some air filtration units. You can get them on Amazon, some will even display the air quality in the room.

If you want to go industrial you can get the air scrubbers (also on Amazon) The ALORAIR is what we have and it does an amazing job. They run about $500.

Also, the PURPLEAIR website has a great N. America map that you can see where the smoke is going and what your area is like. Great to know to stay indoors.

Sorry for your problems, I totally know what you're going through. --73.229.xx.xx

Sandy, thank you. I will get one of those. I have a purifier but its crappy. 6x6, there seems to be air flow in here, nice cool air because smoke particles are bigger than air molecules which will come through tiny openings. That's my guess as it's ok and not stuffy. I am not cooking anything tonight just eating microwavable. I have over fifty large trees around the house and they cool the air, produce oxygen and filter out bad stuff. I helped a woman who was worried about her parrot by telling her to hang wet bed sheets between him and the place where the smoke was getting in and others told her to cover her windows with plastic. The only place I can see that it is coming in is a couple of holes in my office ceiling that the plumber didn't fill when he did a repair. It's coming in under the gutter, into the area under the bathtub and then into the space between the floor and ceiling but it's minimal, maybe a whiff now and then. --173.61.xxx.xxx

Forest fires are going to be more common and severe where in the province of Ontario there are 25 forest fires. The future is to adapt where houses, buildings need to air tight then until weather changes then system will work through. There is no border between weather conditions where weather systems move between both countries. Spray foam seals up any openings where any holes will keep out mice and rats. --74.220.xxx.xxx

Allym, I am so sorry to hear about the smokey conditions in your area. We were severely hit a few years ago during the Santa Cruz/CZ Fire along with other local ones. People wore masks during this time before covid and limited time spent outdoors.

I hope that you and your neighbors will be able to obtain purifiers that Sandy recommended. A local company recommended something called the Infinity Air Purifier. It was costly, but the sale pitch was that it would filter out smoke particles.

Thank you for helping the woman with her parrot. May you, your own pets, trees, and region fare through this awful period of twenty-five fires as Robert in Ontario noted. Take care. --73.241.xxx.xxx

I'm not sure you got that idea from me, I posted it here and there back for over 15 years years mostly to control house dust and allergies from pollen etc.

Anyway,..I'm I misreading? You are using 4 filters on one fan?

I would think that would cut down so much of the air flow that it wouldn't be very good.

I use a hi tech single furnace filter on mine leaving it on low speed 24/7,..and make sure they are turned on high if vacuuming/dusting for a while,..

Some people have told me that they turn them off when not at home to save electricity but I tell them to calculate use leaving them constantly on,..its a tiny amount but because they can see/hear it they assume it has to burn a lot,.

Depending how big your house is, I suggest several but maybe the most important is one in the bedroom...

I'm in the Pacific Northwest and every year we get smoke from wildfires, sometimes lasting for months.

I keep all my windows closed and the windows have good weather sealing. I run the AC, and if it isn't warm enough to run the AC, I run the system fan only and that runs the air inside the house through the air filters and that is enough to keep the air inside the house bearable --76.178.xxx.xxx

Hollis, I've seen where 4 filters were used to build a box held together with duct tape. Then the fan as a 5th side and a piece of cardboard as the sixth side that sits on the floor. That provides lots of surface area since the HEPA filters create a lot of resistance. It works really well but takes up quite a bit of floor space. --209.205.xxx.xx

The smoke was lighter today. I had to take my six pound dog to the vet for an ear problem recheck so that was a big help. I worry most about his little lungs. No coughing in here. A bit of a taste overnight but around six AM the cool oxygenated air from all my trees right up against the house, started filtering in. I also found my air purifier and started it up. I think it is helping deal with the small amount that was coming in. Out door cats are all fine even the tiny new ones. But how long will they be fine? I wonder if this smoke was practice and some kind of slow acting nuclear dust is next. They want our land but don't want t o clean up a mess.

Yeah that seems like something that takes too much room, esp if you have a big house I would rather have a one 20 dollar box fan with one hi tech 20 inch furnace filter on the intake side , held by the suction in several rooms esp the bedroom.

Its true that the filters cost about as much as the fan,..unless you find a deal /in bulk. I find unless you are in a particular dusty area,..They last for a few months, maybe longer after you de dust your house which I do with an electric air blower,.. ONE , or a dead end room,.then open window opposite end of house and place a hi output fan set on a tray a foot or two back from that window (creates a sort of a venturi effect from the sides greatly increasing the flow out,)..then carefully blowing down with an electric yard leaf blower of floors, under couches, beds etc then walls and ceilings

You can get skilled at this in just a few minutes and do it without destroying things, on walls,.standing back and moving the blower quickly,..so maybe things on walls will rattle a bit but not be knocked off etc,.

Most say they can tell that they feel better in their house for months after doing that,..and their filters lasts much longer

THEN (you have to go to the store it pick it up) they give you a 99.00 gift coupon that you can use anytime after that day for anything else in that big variety store,.So in essence its free, I don't think they limit the quantity.Or the time you have to use the coupons. --73.4.xxx.xx

John MI. Don't worry about the nuclear dust they will send down here. You will never feel it. It will take a few years for the disease process to get you. It will be like the radioactive lobsters from the nuclear sub that went down near the coast of Maine back in the day. It took years for people to notice when a President, his wife and their dog Millie, all came down with thyroid disease and had to lose their thyroids and go on supplements. Unfortunately, my neighbor's daughter ate lobster up there when the family went for a vacation years ago. She is almost forty now and they are handling her thyroid disease with modern techniques. It probably killed my cousins who live on the Cape in Orleans, MA. Both died of cancer. It's not overfishing that closed the lobster grounds. It's radioactive. Someone heard about the Bush family and the dog and asked her husband about that since he worked for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He told her about the submarine then she told me. Then authorities started checking all the babies born down at the Cape. It will be like that, so don't worry. You will hardly notice. --173.61.xxx.xxx
