Overhead Conversation (by Doogie [KS]) Posted on: Apr 26, 2019 6:38 AM

I was at the local watering hole with a buddy the other day. Some lady came up to him and they obviously knew each other. He asked this lady how her daughter was doing and she responded that the daughter was getting ready to head to college next year. She then goes on to say that they were getting her an ESA. They had checked on housing and couldn't find anything that allowed pets, so they thought she needed an ESA instead.

My jaw hit the floor and it took all that I had to not say anything. I didn't know this lady from Adam and I didn't want to start anything. She was obviously tipsy, which only would have made matters worse. It just kills me the mentality of this. It did get me wondering if dorms at colleges now have to allow ESA's? I know they would have to allow service animals, but how do they handle ESA's?

I don't know how they handle them at college, but this subject is something I am floored with all the time. I get it... sometimes a pet can be comforting.....I love my pets to death, but the fact that people will lie to have them is besides me. We "allow" certain pets and people that are up front and honest about what they have are the ones that I don't have to ever remind to clean up after their pets nor do we have damage in their units when they move.

The ones that try to "sneak" them in and then tell me they are ESA - yup, don't clean up after them and let them do what ever they want in the unit and then refuse or try to get out of paying for the damage when they move.

Yep, that is exactly the mentality today. If you can't get what you want then lie, cheat, and steal so that you can get it anyway. And she is setting a great example for her child. What a joke! --24.20.xxx.xxx

When I went to college (late 80s early 90s) I don't remember any pets in the dorms except aquariums/terrariums and few people had those. Certainly no one had dogs or cats in a dorm room.

I know it seems hard to get involved with this lady knowing your friend but this is a good example of a time when you could report this to the authorities. We need to report people like this and put a stop to it.

Does your friend LL? Does he know you do? Have you talked to your friend about the ESA problems and if so what do they say?

All these fake ESA’s you see and hear about these days infuriates me!!!! It’s no different than faking your kid is blind in order to go to the front of the line at Disney, or faking being mental retarded to meet a professional athlete. These people are faking a DISABILITY in order to get what they WANT. 6X6, right now I think 23 states have fake service dog/ESA laws. But I think if you were to go into the police station in any of those states and say “I overheard so-in-so say that they were going to have their kid lie about needing an ESA so the kid can have a pet” you’d be lucky if the police said they will look into it and then do nothing after you left. They would most likely just say there’s nothing we can do. Unfortunately because 1) ultimately it’s hearsay, 2) they probably couldn’t be bothered. It’s a shame really because this nonsense needs to stop. --71.248.xxx.xxx

Yes, college dorms have to take ESAs. I downloaded the policy from a local state University, as I thought it would it would make a good template for our company's policy. I was told by our LL association that it was too restrictive. So I downloaded one from public housing in San Francisco and took it to our attorney. Our attorney told us that one was too restrictive.

So now, I believe that government housing and colleges have more rights than me, a private LL. --98.146.xxx.xxx

Doogie,

I had a similar event.

I was poking a for rent sign in a yard as a neighbor walked by with his little puffball of a dog.

I used my standard icebreaker line “Is that your vicious watchdog(grin)?”

He replied “He’s my little buddy. Had him for 10 years. But I think I’m gonna start calling him my emotional support animal so I can stop paying pet rent.”

I would have gotten a look of sincere sympathy and said, "Oh my gosh. I'm so sorry to heat that your child has a mental disability. That must be really hard on you, raising a handicapped child"

Then watch how outraged she got. The tenants with ESA are deeply offended if you imply that they have a mental condition. --98.146.xxx.xxx

The punishment for faking an ESA should be you actually have to spend the day with a child that truly needs an ESA, but doesn’t have 1 because everyone thinks there all fakers. My friend has a severely autistic child that is non communicative and has an ESA, they own there own home so they just call it a pet. The dog really soothes him when he has an “episode” Anyway.....1 day with this boy and they would NEVER fake a mental illness again to get an ESA. --72.224.xxx.xxx

6x6, you are right they don’t, but what these people faking the ESA’s are is extremely self centered and spoiled. Spending a day with this poor child is very trying for his parents, I can only imagine the day that these people would have, they would probably be ready to jump in front of a truck after an half an hour. I’m not making fun of the boy, or his family. His father is a co-worker that I think of as a brother more than a friend. I trust my life to him, but this child is extraordinary difficult, I take my hat off that they give this boy the best life they can at the sacrifice of their own happiness. It’s a monumental task. --71.248.xxx.xxx
