6. Screen. (I would assume she didn't.)

7. Lock doors behind you when you're in units.

I used live in that area. They did some wacky stuff, zoned all the large apt complexes into one "block" next to the freeway. The rest of the city was your basic single family suburb, but you had that one area was all apt --50.4.xxx.x

Glad she is alive and that they caught the perp. Anyone can easily find out where you live. It makes sense to pay attention to our surroundings and not put yourself in bad positions, but we can't live our lives in fear.

I shake my head when I see idiots walking in heads-down mode, absorbed in their stupid smartphones, oblivious to the world. Street thugs have a much easier time with them. --73.95.xxx.xx

This is terrible but it sounds more like a roommate situation than landlord/tenant, and I would bet that little or no screening was done. --72.188.xxx.xxx

Why not charge with attempted murder? Yikes.

Always let someone know where you are or where you are going. True about locking yourself inside when working...you can't see them coming.

I guess I am lucky I live where I do. The other morning I drove down town and noticed I had left the garage roll up door open for a couple of days. I guess nothing is gone.

Somewhere I know I have a lock for my house but can’t remember where it is.

Been working on my tractor that I use to mow and just left the parts, tools lying outside for a couple of days while waiting for parts.

No need for me to try to hide and not let tenants know where I live. Population ~ 400. A stranger comes to town and ask where I live. The very talkative worker at the one and only gas – convenience store says “oh, he lives … Cats out of the bag.

I guess the one and only time I locked my car doors I notice the next morning my keys were just where I always leave them. Inside the car in the ignition.

Guess you will be reading about me in the newspaper.

I purchased a building from a couple. He was a designer and she was a doctor. Both drove high end BMW's. I showed up in my old 1989 Honda and the tenants loved me. Even with I showed up with a work van they saw I was a "working class" guy. --47.156.xx.xx

Mike SWMO.... we gotta get you a good disguise! ;-) I think a small town is less likely (but not impossible) to have the types of problems like the one in this story. Even if someone comes from out of town, odds are excellent there's not 1 murderer for every 401 people or else the murder rate would skyrocket.

None of my tenants even know my last name, much less where I live. We use a PO Box for mailing stuff. No picking up rent in person. Use my first name only in all communications (no one asks for last name). I'm the Manager. Lock box showings cuts down on the number of unknown people I meet.

No system is perfect. Take whatever steps I can to improve the odds in my favor and trust in God's providence. --173.20.xxx.xxx

Mike SWMO - I am jealous, and you ARE fortunate to live in a place like that! Let's hope it lasts a little longer.

Remind me of the small town where I grew up, but it sure isn't like that any more - certainly not here. --68.10.xxx.x

Ken, I’m the same as Sid. Most never ask for a last name. The lease is with the LLC. I sign the name of the LLC on the lease and then under sign my first name with manager next to it. All emails go to LLC email and I sign again with first name and LLC info. People who ask if I own the building, I respond that x LLC owns the building and I manage it for them. I simply leave off that I am the managing member of the LLC. --24.61.xxx.xx

David,

Thanks for posting.

Perhaps this woman is in the group who claims "In 20 years of LLing I've never had a problem with safety".

It only takes one incident to ruin your life, and it's usually a surprise.

The places we've had in the country were the worst. Metal gates stolen, mowers stolen, trash piles dumped in the yard, windows and signs shot out, mailboxes smashed...in quiet rural Indiana. There's no one around to see the baddies.

I take the name thing s step further. I do not use my real FIRST or LAST name with prospects or residents. I use a nickname with no last name.

Signing leases? Either a scribble or the initials of my company.

I have had a lot of threats concerning my cars. Not great cars, but I would be going into a building and hear some hang around in the street guy say something like. "Why don't you get her car?" "Nah, with that club on there she would have the police here before I could get it of." That was a white For, can't think of the name of it but it was the one kind of shaped like a big XKE. Then a kid walked past my house and said to another that he was going to steal my car. That was a 89 Ford Bronco II, great car. So the other kid said to him why don't you get a job and buy one. Cars are always a problem if they are nice. I had an old Porsche 924 and before clubs were invented I ran a chain through the steering wheel and one door handle with a padlock on it when I had to park it somewhere not good. --173.61.xxx.xx
