We were wondering if anyone has put HSA money to work in a Self-Directed IRA. Too much trouble or not? Any experience with this to share?

HSA is more tax-advantaged than IRA . Keep it there and let it work for you. Or use it for out of pocket health costs --50.4.xxx.x

Putting HSA into a SD-IRA? I've never heard of such a thing. And why would you need or want to? The money is already pre-tax. Just doesn't make any sense at all.

An HSA is pretty much an IRA already. Just let it continue to grow tax deferred until you need it. --24.20.xxx.xxx

I worded it poorly. It is actually

a Self-directed HSA and behaves as a Self-directed IRA.This is from the Equity Trust site: "Contributions can be invested (similar to a self-directed IRA)—with a self-directed HSA, funds can be invested with the possibility of accumulating tax-free or tax-deferred profits in investments that you know best." --76.189.xxx.xxx

HSA is the greatest savings vehicle. Money goes in tax free, grows tax free and comes out tax free (if spent on health care expenses). Best strategy is to put as much as allowed in HSA each year and pay for health care expenses out of pocket. Leave the HSA alone and let it grow. Self direct it if allowed. --75.146.xxx.xxx

Okay Brett. I believe I know what you are talking about now. The only HSAs I would consider like this would be those that give you the opportunity to invest in broad ETF/mutual fund choices such as S&P 500 or Total Stock Index funds.

And the only time you should consider something like that would be if you know you weren't going to be touching those funds for many years.

BTW, look carefully at the fees charged by these particular participants. Many charge a high annual fee and very high annual expense ratios. If you don't know what you are looking for the fees will eat you alive. --24.20.xxx.xxx

Will you be going to the convention this year? John Hyre will be speaking and this is one of his many areas of expertise. IRA Innovations is usually a convention sponsor and I believe they offer self directed HSAs.

Self directed HSAs have restrictions similar to self directed IRAs, but as long as your deals fit they're a great investment vehicle. --67.189.xxx.xxx

HSA are triple the benefit. Money goes into the account before tax, it grows tax free and then the money is tax free when you pull it out.

The down side, they are expensive --72.23.xxx.xx
