NJ presidential candidate, Cory Booker, is saying he will give renters $2000 to help them with their rent. So that will just drive up the price of apartments. This is like Pelosi giving 200K mortgages to first time home buyers with poor credit in 2007. Pretty soon boarded up shacks were selling for 200K due to greedy realtors. What could go wrong with Booker's plan?

Right. He wouldn’t be giving renters anything. He’d be giving an extra $2,000 to LLs, which is fine by me. No worries, tho. That dude hasn’t polled over 5%. --50.107.xxx.xxx

I was educating my 12 year old about Sanders policy on free tuition.. Always ask where does the money come from?

It's like Walsh wants to host illegal in city hall.. why not his own home? Liberals are liberal with others' money or service, just not their own. Too many liberal supporters are brain dead..

I am trying to save my 12 year old.. --71.232.xxx.xxx

If they're force Section 8 nationwide, it will crush landlords, in turn crushing affordable housing once again. I would wager a bet that it could cause major ripples in the banking system.

I don't know about other areas but with my inherited section 8 tenants, I had the section 8 office withhold ALL deposits on a violation for one unit. I received them after it was fixed? Neat huh?

How that going to fly with folks nationwide???

Mine are systematically moved out when they come with the unit. Like old cabinets and stained carpets. --174.201.xx.xxx

$2,000 a year every year, or $2,000 as a one time grant?

Either help them with their deposit, or get the rent raised. Although I suspect it might go into a new tv set instead of rent.

They will have to compensate for that somehow, probably by raising taxes on landlords.

Seriously, if the voters want Lower income people and homeless-by-choice people housed

, the government should build huge cheap apartment blocks and the government can house them instead of trying to push the responsibility and expense off onto private landlords. --98.146.xxx.xxx

$2000 for what? As a tax credit?

Does Booker also want to give homeowners a similar tax credit? If so, OK.

S8 in my area does not pay market rent. I had many calls in January when I had a place available, and a number of them were S8. My rent for one of my lowest cost 1-bedroom duplexes without utilities is right about the max S8 pays in my area WITH utilities. Naturally, they all wanted to see it, and insisted it needed to include utilities.

Just one more reason for my pre-showing survey. Most of these potential applicants didn’t have sufficient income, nor length at job, were evicted somewhere, or simply refused to fill out our preshowing survey. Sorry, the preshowing survey is required, and followed with a Casenet Lookup.

The funniest part was when I received a call from the S8office calling to set up an inspection appointment. I didn’t have an application from their client and she had refused to fill out my preshowing survey. That removed her from consideration as being uncooperative. No need for S8 inspection. --64.251.xxx.xxx

That bad part is that if this becomes a nationwide law that we must accept S8's that you can bet they also do work-arounds to ensure that we may not even be able to start discriminating against past evictions, bad credit, income, etc, etc. Pure potential chaos! --24.20.xxx.xxx

employment now - landlords are next

New York City's Fair Chance Act (FCA), which took effect October 27, 2015, imposes affirmative obligations on covered employers and employment agencies regarding when they may conduct criminal background checks on job applicants

massive changes to our landlord lives will come in bits and pieces

"Does Booker also want to give homeowners a similar tax credit? " Yes, we have something called the mortgage interested deduction, but due to the new tax law, many people are not able to use it anymore. So back in the day, renters could not deduct their housing costs but homeowners could. --50.4.xxx.x

AllyM: Can you give a reference to what you are referring to exactly? Is this something brand new from Booker? He introduced the HOME Act back almost a year ago, but I don't think it has had much movement. And, looking over it, I don't see anything talking about "giving tenants $2,000." It is more of a tax credit for renters.

I just did a search for "Cory Booker" mentioning anything about "$2,000" in the past week -- and all of the referencing are about his idea for a "baby bond" system where money is put into a bond when a child is born. But I couldn't find anything within the past month talking about Cory Booker and $2,000 for renters.

But I could just be missing it. So if you could fill us in on what you are talking about -- especially if it is something different than an old proposal from almost a year ago -- I'd be interested in looking into it.
