I was just taking a local survey and came across these DHM survey stats regarding cannabis use:

60% male

24% of users earn less than $25k (the lowest category listed)

23% of users earn between $25k and $50k

19% of users earn between $50k and $75k

14% of users earn between $75k and $100k

14% of users earn between $100k and $150k

...

only 6% of users earn over $150k

...

35% of users are 55+ in age

35% of users are between 35 and 54

30% of users in youngest category

...

32% of users have either no HS education or are only HS grad

33% either have a little college or up to a 2 year degree

...

What really surprises me here is that although the ages of users is spread quite evenly through the age categories (even higher for the two oldest categories) the income for the two lowest categories dominate for users. So no matter their age marijuana users seem to be the lowest earners by a large margin. --24.20.xxx.xxx

I am interpreting the income statistics much differently...

So I found this from 2016(latest data available). Looks to me that the cross section of people that use cannabis is fairly spread evenly...which is a huge surprise to me.

70,075,212 people earned under $25,000 – 42.85% of the total

44,496,340 people earned between $20,000 and 50,000 – 27.21% of the total

34,098,312 people earned between $50,000 and $100,000 – 20.85% of the total

11,528,382 people earned between $100,000 and $200,000 -7.05% of the total

3,322,360 people earned over $200,000 – 2.03% of the total --142.54.xx.xxx

Judging by my cannabis stock investments business is BOOMING! This industry is so new demographics may continue to change as different states legalize and different products are introduced in the market.

Knowing my son’s college roommates, those that smoked all the time are in lower paying jobs and not as ambitious or “hungry”. My guess is as you go up the pay scale, the frequency of use goes down --24.61.xxx.xx

Everyone I know who uses it is in their 40's or older (even some older than me.) Regular professional people with normal jobs: they use it the same way they use alcohol: afterwork wind-down. Or in edible form for pain and anxiety. Perhaps they don't get counted because they don't admit it when asked. --50.82.xxx.xx

I think it depends on how you define user. Plenty of people can handle using MJ now and then with no issue. But almost anyone who finds the need to use substances, including alcohol, every day is going to have problems with performing as a functional adult. Just my opinion. --72.188.xxx.xxx

I have noticed something else myself. Even if the users have decent paying jobs, the ones that I personally know have very little net worth. This includes some of my own family, friends and acquaintances. --24.20.xxx.xxx

I've been pondering this question for a while now, given the national pressure to legalize.

So which comes first the chicken or the egg,

Do people who abuse MJ already have motivational issues OR

Do people who abuse MJ acquire motivational issues with use?

I use MJ in this example, but I could substitute drugs or overuse of alcohol just as well. I've seen lots of young people get hooked and throw away a budding career but is that because they lacked the motivation to carry through in the first place? or because they got hooked?

Indeed -- my guess would be that it would be very easy for "surveys" on this to be biased to certain income categories.

I also think people that make $100k+ per year are probably much less likely to admit on some survey that they use cannabis.

And, heck, just looking at the original stats -- even if they are off -- it says that 35% of users have something more than a "2-year college degree." That's a big chunk of people.

I think some people still believe the getting-outdated idea that cannabis users are all lazy kids making minimum wage. That just isn't reality any more (if it even was in the past).

No one I know personally who uses MJ (myself included) is lazy, uneducated, or making minimum wage. They are almost without exception smart, educated and well employed. Their use is identical to anyone who has a drink or two after work to relax. In fact, many of them no longer drink alcohol, myself included. Not that I systematically turn down a cocktail if someone offers me one, but in recent years even the most moderate consumption gives me a headache.

I have an elderly (although still very active and open minded) relative who is up in arms over the proposed dispensary that will open very close to her home. She is afraid her neighborhood will be overrun with degenerates. Soon enough she will realize that it is patronized mostly by college educated people with extra money. --161.11.xxx.xxx

Agreed John, also someone who only smokes it now and then when it's offered to them may not even identify themselves as a marijuana user. It's a hard subject to do a survey on.
