We have a sfh that has aluminum siding that is in pretty good shape. But we have a perennial problem with a couple of courses of siding that are smack-dab in the middle of a two-story side wall. These courses occasionally "pop". In the past, we've been able to get the courses hooked back together properly. But one course is now apparently settled about a millimeter or so too low, and will no longer snap into where it should.

While we COULD take off all of the courses below, and shift them all up, that isn't happening! We've checked around, and the best solution seems to be to use Lexel caulk to essentially stick together the two pieces - we'd hold them in place with wood blocks and (of course) duct tape until the Lexel is fully cured.

But - does anyone have a better idea? We'd love to hear it!

FYI, we experimented with exaggerating the bend that is in the middle (between the two "clapboards" per section of siding), but that didn't work. Plus it didn't look right at that shadow line. --71.175.xxx.xx

I'd put a few screws in the face of the panel and paint them to match. Make sure the metal screw is the same metal as the siding. --173.24.xxx.xxx

I don't thing that the caulking will help hold them together very well. I'd wait until a nice hot summer day when the material has expanded with the heat, to try hooking the panels together. Once they are together I might try adding a couple of pop rivets or possibly some short screws to try keeping them aligned.

We just had a crazy windstorm here last week. There is vinyl and aluminum siding strung from one end of town to the other. I don't see how Lexel, NP1, or any other adhesive would provide enough hold. My bet at the next wind storm you would be looking for your siding across town.

I've seen both screws and pop rivets used. The rivets tend to look better but I can't say which has the better hold. --50.26.xx.xxx

I do a lot of furnace sheet metal, those short self tapping screws work well aimed upwards where the overlaps are and a cab of paint from a 1-580 covers them to match the siding, if you need to splice in some siding use flat paint to blend into the weathered siding.
