I am going to try to leak proof my new kitchen sink cabinet.

I was going to put vinyl stick on tile on the bottom and then create a six six inch "baseboard" around the sides and insides of the cabinet doors as well.

In the past I have just butted the vinyl tiles up against each other but should I be caulking them with silicone as well? Thanks.

I have done couple with leftover of whole sheets vinyl.. I made a mistake of only raised 1" ish at the edge and one tenant managed to overspill through that..

Yesterday I discovered that a being-evicted tenant's bathroom sink drain was snapped and they use it with no problem for more than a week. (I noticed a week ago, being in the eviction process I didn't want to deal with it, then I dropped by yesterday, the basement has a big puddle of water, I had to .., Its a multifamily, basement is public space)

My kids hate that I use the word ghetto, but this is ghetto and I vowed not to let that kind of mistake happen again.. --71.232.xxx.xxx

I googled and it looks like HD carries Lexel but doesn't keep it stocked in store, you have to order it from them. --72.188.xxx.xxx

Ya probably a typo. Clear tube, red lettering. Expensive stuff. Stick a nail in the end of the tube when you're done so it doesn't go bad. --50.32.xxx.xxx

I’ve had local sheet metal shops make custom drain pans for me. I’ll then install the made to fit drain pan in the cabinet under the sink and even run a short drain line from it into the crawl space. Maybe it’s a bit overkill but it works for me. --73.177.xxx.xx

Wire nuts also make pretty good end seal for caulking tubes, nail seem to slide out, long screws help pull out the blockage but nothing works everytime.

Save the cheap vinyl tiles for another project, make it easy on yourself: how about coating the cabinet insides with Redgard and then sealing up the joints with good caulk?

Then you need to think about downstream-- what happens to the water that spills out of the waterproof cabinet-- what damage can it cause?

Probably best to also address the upstream. Make sure the sink is well sealed to the countertop, and the plumbing supply lines, valves, etc. and drain lines are good quality and in good shape, installed well, and therefore, not as prone to leaking in the first place. --174.21.xxx.xx

Yes it's spelled Lexel. you could also use Geocel caulking if you can find it locally. they are both excellent. Geocel also makes a caulking to use with rubber roofing.

FYI if you have a big gap to fill, I like to use some backer rod (can use strips of pool noodles or foam pipe insulation) first. Once you have backer rod in place use Big Stretch brand of caulking. You'll be amazed at how much it can stretch with the temperature swings. --96.237.xx.xx

Having a waterproof material at the bottom of the cabinet is ok if there is a slight drip that will evaporate, but not for anything more. You want to "leakproof" it. If there is steady water, where is it ultimately gonna go?? Are you going to make the bottom of your cabinet like a basin? Eventually it will come out the doors! --70.90.xx.xxx

I put a piece of sheet vinyl on the bottom. As don said, you want to make it withstand a drip. You don't want that drip to be absorbed into the bottom of the cabinet and ruin it. So maybe go a little up the side to protect from splashing. But if it is a gusher leak, it is going to pour out the door anyway. With the sheet vinyl, it is a very smooth surface, so you won't get junk stuck in any crevices. Even the best caulk job is not perfectly smooth.

I do agree that Lexel is a great product. Expensive compared to other caulks. --108.4.xxx.xx
