Massage Chairs??? (by WMH [NC]) Posted on: Mar 15, 2019 3:48 AM

I noticed on another thread that a few people have massage chairs. We used to have one, wonderful, lasted a decade. But it was less than $1000 and now they seem to be $5k...

We want the kind that actually massages, not just vibrates!

Any suggestions?

Inlaw has one of those actually massages, Panasonic? I fell asleep couple times while laying on it. After 5+ years gentle use, something wasn't working properly and not sure who to call to fix it. (nobody is over 200 lbs.)

Make sure you have someone who can take it away when it is time to junk it.. (super heavy and bulky) --71.232.xxx.xxx

They are great! Sometimes I've seen them used forsale. There was a store called Second Wind that sold slightly used excise equipment and they also has these chairs. The one we had came from Relax the Back. Yes new is expensive. Ask the new sales for a discount or when the next sale is. Perhaps last years model is marked down...I've also seen a few for sale at estate sales. --99.203.xx.xxx

I have used them at airports between flights, noticed the pedicure industry has them that hang over the backrest with side variety of folding - flexing - rolling and they cost about 250-400 bux, I want to get one soon myself.

I'm pretty certain I've seen many options when Costco does their demonstrations for around $2500 to $5500. We found ours used on CL several years ago.

Agree with Elliot here. They are extremely heavy. I might die before trying to move mine again. --24.20.xxx.xxx

I had one that vibrated, can't recall if it had rollers. I "scored" on it. Don't recall what I paid, but I got a substantial discount, like $600 off, because it didn't have the power cord and was a discontinued floor model. When we got home we found the cord under the seat. It lasted quite awhile, finally the naugahyde split and we curbed it. It's probably still massaging folks in a crack house somewhere. LOL

My chiropracter has a couple of massage beds. It's so relaxing. I go about once a week for 1/2 an hour. I think his cost several thousand though.

What I want is a bed that tilts up to a standing position, with retractable arms to hold my clothes up as I fall into them and a big boot that swings down to get me moving in the right direction. LOL :) --47.216.xx.xxx

Lot cheaper than a chair is the foot massager where you stick your whole foot in and it gets squeezed and rolled and vibrated + heat. That fancy catalog store in the mall makes a good one. --24.194.xx.xx

We have a Premier 2026 which is now about 12 years old. It was the strongest chair with the most motors and best warranty at the time. I took the back pads out and rode right up against the rollers for so long the fabric over the rollers wore out, but that chair is still the biggest, baddest Monster Pounder around. I also use it upside down to get a really great leg and butt massage.

2 years ago, we bought an Inada Flex 3s. This chair fits my 5'4" 160 lb body perfectly. It does outstanding leg and foot massage, as well as having padded supports that pull your shoulders down where they belong. There are several stretching, massaging, and chiropractic routines that will target your whole body or just a particular area. To me, this chair is less of a 'pounder' and more of a 'nurturer'.

If I may offer some advice about massage chairs. First, the chair has to be a good fit for your body. But what happens if you like what a chair offers but it is designed for 6'+ people (like the Premier) and you're a diminutive 5' tall? Or a chair is comfortable and does amazing massages but there is no decent heat feature (like the Inada)?

It is not possible for a manufacturer to design a chair perfect for every single body type, but you CAN make it perfect for you! Areas where chairs come up short are neck, lumbar, and hip regions. You should feel fully supported in your chair; experiment with folded or rolled blankets, pillows, towels and heating pads to customize your chair so it's just right. Keep a soft throw close by so you can stay warm during your relaxation. And while chair shopping, please take your time. Go to Relax the Back or Brookstone or Costco and really spend some time putting every chair through its paces. Run every single program all the way through. Don't worry about price tags until after your trial runs; sometimes all you need is basic kneading, tapping, and rolling which even the least expensive chairs all do these days. That said, my chairs are what keep me active and sane; whatever they cost is worth it. --24.176.xxx.xxx
