I am looking for cheap laminate counter tops WITHOUT the backsplash attached. Not custom built.

Home Depot and Lowes are cheap and good enough for rentals but backsplash is always attached so when the wall is bad it is a nightmare. I am hoping to find another option.

Home Depot and Lowe’s should be able to order them. Or look for a countertop shop in your area that specializes in post form laminate. --166.137.xxx.xxx

I have on several occasions cut the backsplash off the pre fab Lowes and Home Depot stuff. Then added a tile type backsplash. All it takes is a good roll of masking tape and a skill saw. --75.141.xxx.xxx

Richard (MI) I did not know you could make countertops from plywood and laminate. How well do these hold up in a C/D rental? I currently use the prefab stuff, and it shows a lot of wear very quickly.

Thanks in advance for any advice. --157.204.x.x

Del,

They hold up pretty well. For the best result, use a double layer of 5/8 plywood. There's no doubt that there are video's on you tube. You'll need a laminate trimmer (about $60) to get a good look but it can be done fairly well with a flat file and a bit of practice.

I think there are now products available where you can stain and deal the plywood and avoid needing the laminate but the laminate is cheap.

Might also find some at Habitat Restore. I've gotten countertops there for $20-$25 before but they must be cut to fit. --23.121.xx.xxx

Not all laminate is created equal. The big box stores use the thinner/cheaper version and I've never had good luck with the glue-on/heat activated ends.

Most mid-range or larger towns have a laminate top fabricator, it is only slightly more expensive than box store but the better quality will last 5x longer. They can make them with or without back-splash and you can pick the front edge finish. --50.26.xx.xxx

I have good results by relaminating existing tops. Many how to videos on the subject. --72.172.xxx.xx

The backless stuff is custom, therefore costs more. I have made my own before, to make a wide peninsula w/ room for seating. Worked well, except practice trimming the edge on scrap first, to get the hang of it. If you have a router, just use a flush cut bit. If you do not yet own a laminate trimmer or a router, I recommend getting a router - you can do a lot more stuff with it.

BTW: you glue laminate to the plywood with contact cement. Need to be careful to use spacers & get it positioned carefully - much easier with a helper. I also have used the same laminate as a backsplash by gluing it to the wall. (lower end rental) I think it actually looked quite good - and washable. In the same place, I also put the laminate on the front of the toe-kick area under the base cabinets. Looked "custom" and again, easy to clean.

Seriously, search youtube.

Good luck! Let us know what you do & how it goes.

We make them ourselves. Use plywood and high quality laminate which is way better than the prefab particle board ones. They hold up well but can still be damaged like anything else. Need carpentry skills though. --216.186.xxx.xx
