I recently saw a TV ad for TURO where people are now renting out cars like AIRBNB does for lodging

We are changing from ownership to renting in almost all areas of our economy.

As millennials enter adulthood and the middle class, the trend seems to be for them to own less stuff.

The things being shared are almost unlimited from Office spaces to peer to peer lending and even scooters and bicycles are on street corners

There is a very bright future for our Rental niche

Somewhat yes....although I'm still skeptical about the long-term trends of SOME areas of the sharing economy.

For a long-time, experts said Millennial were less likely to buy homes than generations prior. That was true simply because they delayed having families, but now as they age into their mid-30s and are settling down, their percentage of ownership is just as high as Gen X and Boomers were at that stage. So the trend was simply delayed, not decreased.

With cars...maybe. I think there's a future for self-driving car rentals vs. having your own car exclusively for personal. If we think about it, most of our cars spend 90% of their life sitting in a garage or parked. What if that car could be picking people up for shopping trips? Once the tech is there to prove them safer than human-driven cars, insurance rates will plummet even if more hours are spent on the road. The trade off would be cars don't last as many years because they'll be racking up more miles per day. So maybe the same number of cars will be sold, but we'll see the fleet turn over faster? I dunno....fun to think about.

I am NOT sharing my basement bar...unless I'm behind it serving drinks to friends! ;-)

We were in Austin recently visiting son, the scooter thing actually makes sense. Check one out on one corner, ride it 30 blocks and drop it off pretty much anywher. Costs a couple of bucks, way cheaper than other forms of transportation and no wait time.

That said, I'm not sure individuals trying to compete against car renting companies is going to have the same outcome. I suspect some of this is a fad that will pass, others will stick around. I don't really see any dynamics changing in the housing market which is already well established. --50.26.xx.xxx

Insurance, insurance , insurance. Renting out my car is a great idea. Insurance carriers do not know who is driving it daily, though. They want to vet (verify) everyone who will be using it. So I don’t know how you could do it with your own car. I like the idea of a self driving car rental. As long as they are reliable, timely, and safe : good idea. But as a landlord, it wouldn’t be convenient as I carry too many tools and parts and pieces to load and unload what I need to go to work each day. I, too, look forward to what’s next in autos. Cool to ride, but scooters depend on good weather..... --162.238.xx.xxx

MikeA, I read an article last week describing Hertz and all airport car rental companies as headed over cliff due to changes in traveler behavior.

Owning A nice new car doesn’t hold appeal to very many millennials. --72.172.xxx.xx

The bicycle sharing fad was a disaster. Downtown Dallas was littered with bikes everywhere.

Since the scooters need to be placed on charging stations, that's not as big a problem plus I think there are less entries into the competition compared to bikes.

The biggest problem with scooters is accidents. I saw one scooter rider get hit by a car trying to cross traffic, there have been lots of accidents with the small wheel getting caught on uneven pavement too. Not to mention all the damage drunks renting scooters can do.

As for the car, I could see buying a fleet of cars for the sole purpose of renting, but I wonder how quickly they'd deteriorate if there wasn't anyone watching the rider and making them behave. Imagine drunks throwing up in the car, imagine all the sex, imagine all the trash left in the car, imagine all the smoking. I also bet they'd strip the car down for parts quickly too. I also bet the rental margins will be tight and very competitive. I doubt it will be as profitable as everyone suggests once damage and competition are factored in. --108.69.xxx.xxx

My son told me that one of the scooter companies was paying $20 for individuals to take them to their apartment and charge them. He said one guy that was on the news had 75 in his small apartment. That could be a disaster if the landlord pays the electric, much less the wear and tear, electrical overload, and fire safety. But the tenant was making good money doing it. --50.26.xx.xxx

Ford actually has a plan to build electric cars, totally drives itself, and use as them as taxi in bigger cities. You just go to your smart phone app, say you need a car at XXXX address and what time, car shows up... delivers you to your destination. Repeat. Ford makes $$ of the taxi/haul fees instead of selling the car. Ford actually looks for a decrease in auto ownership in the coming years. Read that article like two years ago.... --66.170.xx.xxx
