I believe "reasonable" is what they say.

So ... are you storing a few boxes, an entire house of furniture, awkward outside yard equipment, etc.?

I have never had to do this. Depending on how much, print out for your file a few price lists from local storage areas and use the price for whatever size you think you'd need. If you actually rent one, use that price along with your moving costs. I'd probably also find a "creative" way to charge for my time, frustration and inconvenience --72.70.xxx.xxx

Right now the items are still in the house. She keeps saying she is coming back to get it. It is stacked in the kitchen and attached storage area. We have the unit rented for April 1 as we are doing painting, replacing carpet etc. now. --98.235.xxx.xxx

The law allows you to move the tenants property to a storage unit and charge the tenant moving and storage costs. I don't see that it allows the landlord to charge for storing it in the property. Magistrates will interpret store in house as they see fit. --71.112.xxx.xxx

I hit the wrong key...

If the stuff is still there after 30 days, move it out, cover with plastic or call the salvation army for a pick up. Any ex tenant who leaves his belongings for more than 30 days is basically telling you that he/she considers it junk. --99.59.x.xxx

Be careful disposing left over tenant possessions. If its worth $600 (check this for a more recent value) or more, you have to follow a specific tenant notice, public auction notice & auction process. If its worth less than this value you have to notify the tenant you'll hold it 10 days ( I believe) and allow him to get it if he pays your storage costs. You have to store the items reasonably securely, what ever that means. In the past I've moved the stuff to an onsite locked garage. In Ca your allowed to charge for storage costs equivalent to how you store the items. So you can value your garage storage equal to what an equivalent commercial shed rental would be. --47.157.xxx.xxx
