State Specific Question About: NORTH CAROLINA (NC)
I rent a house in NC. I am having problems with people pulling in my driveway when I am not home and pulling up to the house before they turn around and leave. My driveway is over 100 ft long. I have security cameras and no trespassing signs. Can I put a rope or chain across my driveway without my landlord getting upset and evicting me? I will not put a lock on it just want to try to prevent people on my property when I am not home. --174.193.x.xx |

If you have a good relationship with your LL, express your concern and ask him. In certain situations, I would not find that unreasonable. --50.32.xxx.xxx |

We had the next door neighbor's father park his RV in the driveway of our vacant rental. Some people do not know limits. Wonder how he would feel if we did that to him? --24.233.xxx.xx |

I would think that if you talk to your LL about the problem, he/she would probably let you know how he/she feels. Explain that a chain would protect HIS PROPERTY. He/she might even prefer a gate, but you won't know if you don't ask. Nothing lost to communicate, but if you don't talk, the relationship could take a turn for the worst. --108.4.xxx.xx |

Let your LL know about the problem and ask before you put up the chain. I personally would put a gate up for my tenants in that situation. --71.10.xxx.xxx |

Just ask your LL! He is not going to be happy about lots of traffic in their driveway either (wear & tear.) Are you in a resort area?
Is the house for sale? --50.82.xxx.xx |

I have a bar down the street from a rental of mine. My property is at the end of the block. There is a sign at the beginning of the street saying "Not a Through Street", but no one reads anymore. On the end of my block there also a sign saying "Dead End". In front of my driveway it says, "No Exit" and "No Turn A Round".
Several times a month drink drivers go up my driveway and sometimes into the first garage door -- sometimes smashing into a tenants car. So I took over that garage space and put a metal posts in front of that door, in matching colors to blend in. Now every so often (like twice a year) someone smashes their vehicle into these post, 6" in diameter buried 8 feet into the ground in concrete. Their vehicles are destroyed!
Finally I got some justice.
Now that they can't just back up and driveway, I have someone to sue. But since California is a sanctuary state, illegals aren't required to have insurance. --47.156.xx.xx |

With a 100 ft drive an electric gate would be nice. I would think your LL would not pay for that but might allow a chain. Only part is having to get out twice each time you leave.
Can't hurt to ask. Gates can be a big enhancement to a property.
My old house had two drives with gates, it was pretty nice, except I was too cheap to put electric openers on them.

Jeff, poster has a legit question. Not as if they are attempting to get one over on the landlord. Although I do wonder why poster felt the need to ask here as opposed to just bringing it up with the landlord. --97.32.x.xxx |

Ask your landlord. It doesn't do you any good for me to give you permission to do it, because I don't own that property and I'm not your landlord, nor am I on your lease.
Just myself, I've had tenants want gates on the drive, which I did, and they never closed the gates. So now, if they want gates, they pay for and install themselves.
That's something for you to consider, Karla. Offer to install some good powder coated gates on sturdy posts at your own expense and the landlord might be receptive to that. --98.146.xxx.xxx |

What sort of cars are coming in there? Are they doing drug deals back there? Previous tenants are the only ones who would know about this driveway. Can you get plate numbers? A simple No Trespassing sign at the front of the drive might help. They seem to scare people. Does anyone get out of the car? Could the landlord be checking on you by sending people up there to look at the house? Are they small cars? Newer cars? Decrepit cars? Trucks? This could be someone with bad intentions. I would certainly ask the landlord for some relief like the chain or at least a No Trespassing sign. Once the sign is up here in NJ, it's a crime to go onto the property. --73.248.xxx.xxx |

Why not ask your LL, he/she may agree?
WMH, I love that you asked was the property for sale. Smart.
Robert J, I have a mail box post that I had made out of 1/4" steel and welded together to look like a wood post painted. I wonder though in your situation what happens if a tenant runs into it?
Jeff, I agree with others that it is a legit LL question. --73.120.xx.xxx |
