Never had an indoor pig, but outdoor pigs pens leave a horrible stench even years after they are gone. The area was even excavated and filled and I could still smell it for about three years and there were only 2 small pigs in it. Does an indoor pig use an outside bathroom like a dog? If it does and they cleaned up after it frequently that might work. --71.10.xxx.xxx

No such thing as a mini-pig. They are either baby potbellied pigs or deliberately underfed to keep them small before sale...afterwards, they keep growing and growing and growing...average size of pigs sold as "indoor" ends up 100-150 pounds. They are only mini when compared to farm bigs that grow to 600+ pounds. --50.82.xxx.xx

What WMH said. Our neighbor had one. My kids could have ridden on its back. I never saw the inside of their house, but I wonder how much damage it did to the floors with 150+ pounds on its little trotters. An in-home visit would reveal a lot!

You could end up with long-term renters here...not sure how many LL would allow a pig! --65.28.xxx.xx

When you do the in-pig pen inspection let us know what you think, I spent many summers on relatives farms and it you have enough acreage the smell is not bad, you did not say if this was a rural rental.

I had an application for a family with a pet pig. About 4 or 5 years ago. I denied them based on No Farm animals and pigs are farm animals. The county or city had ordinances. This pig had some cute word before pig. Pigs will ruin the yard. No pigs no matter how cute. --99.203.xx.xxx

In my town, the ordinances don't allow for a pet pig inside the city limits. The former animal control officer used to be my tenant-- he chatted happily about the one guy who had a pet pig; and he'd given him an ultimatum, to get rid of the pig or else he'd fine him $x/day; and the guy ended up moving rather than living in a town that didn't allow pet pigs.

Anecdotally, they're supposed to be more intelligent than a dog, and about as clean as a cat. Going to the stock show, the livestock pigs have a very sharp, distinct smell, so I don't know how much of that cleanliness depends on the human side of litterbox care. An in-house visit would be extremely important.

Most "mini pigs" are going to be ordinary piglets when they're first acquired. If they're not overfed, you can expect them to be about the size of a medium-sized dog... but maybe two or three times the weight. If you get a pig that's overfed... it might be the size of a big dog... and maybe four or five times its weight.

If the pig's already two or three or four years old, you'll have a good idea of how big they'll be. They keep growing until around age 5. If the pig's less than a year old, it's impossible to tell. --96.46.xxx.xx

I've had some 2 legged pigs that I got when a purchased a apartment complex. Still tool a lot of effort to remove them. Los Angeles won't allow a tenant to evict a tenant from a sub-standard unit, even if a pig lives there. --47.156.xx.xx

I would not accept a pig. However, dig until you find another legal reason to reject or that pig will suddenly have an emotional support animal vest and medical papers obtained online.

I really do wonder what is wrong with the brains of tenants. What is the thought process to decide it is a great idea to get a pet pig and then take their new pig out searching for a new rental? --98.146.xxx.xxx

While ripping a piece of door jamb yesterday, I noticed a distinct smell emanating from the oak. Sniff? Sniff? Oh, it smelled like pig- manure. I made a mental note to shellac-primer that door jamb on all sides. Not a smell I want in a house. --70.92.xxx.xxx

Neighbors have one. Never hear it see it or smell it. It did take them awhile to get used to our ordinances about picking up dog waste. LeePookie,

I have rented to some 2 legged pigs!

They are a breed of their own!

Interestingly in my city, 1 pig can be a pet. 2 or more is a farm.

Can't wait to hear how the In Home looks (and smells!)

I own 2 pot belly pigs. Very smart and cute. I live in the country and they have a pen and shelter OUTSIDE!! I would turn down any application that that came with a pig. NEVER!!! --162.253.xx.xxx

I had a potbelly pig for 11 years, yes inside. She was cleaner than most dogs and cats. She was litter box trained, ate Purina pig chow. She never peed or pooed outside the box, she never made any mess with her food. She never sprayed or tore up anything in the house. She was a lot cleaner than a lot of people I've dealt with. She didn't even bark. I would do the home inspection to see for yourself, they could be model tenants and a model animal too. For the record her poo didn't smell as bad as dog or cat poo, I guess it must depend what you feed them. --174.201.x.xx

I had a friend long ago who had a pig as a pet--in military quarters no less! This pig was trained, obeyed commands, went outside for her business. AND stayed on the porch when commanded, squealed when she needed to leave the porch and waited for permission. I've never seen anything like it. The pig was treated like a dog, and acted like one. (???) But not all pigs are equal. I'd have to see a LOT of that training to let one in my rental. --179.52.xxx.xxx
