PEX Question (by DJ [VA]) Posted on: Feb 20, 2019 5:26 PM

Plumbing question.

We had all new PEX supply lines put into my daughter's fixer-upper. Tonight, the shutoff valve (that will eventually be under the kitchen sink) we were using to get water for drywall cleanup was spinning on the pipe. Messaged the plumber about it and he said it's normal for PEX to do that.

True, or False?

Thanks!

You mean the shut off valve that is inside the pex and crimped on? If so, yes they can spin in the pex without leaking. --50.107.xxx.xx

Yes. Just seemed odd. Others don't spin, and I don't think that one did when we first started using it.

Thanks, NE - I feel a little better having it confirmed by someone else who's familiar with the stuff - It's my first time with PEX --68.10.xxx.x

I've been using pex for years. Ran some past 3 days this week. Great stuff. --50.107.xxx.xx

Yes, it’s normal to spin. Yes, it feels strange. I have put metal tape and or heavy duty duct tape around the fittings and pipe to stop the spin. --75.141.xxx.xxx

We only use the Wisbro expansion style of Pex. It does not spin. I have seen the crimp style of Pex spin when it was used with metal fittings. It was similar to the way Sharkbite fittings can spin. --96.237.xx.xx

DJ,

Wirsbo /Uponor here. Rock solid fittings. Much easier to install than the crimped style.

I worry about a pressurized water fitting that spins.

Keep in mind it should not be real easy to turn.

Most take a little force.

Yours maybe ok. It would not be if it is caused by a bad crimp or the crimper tool was not calibrated right.

I simple cheap go/no go gauge will tell you if the crimp is bad.

I am willing to bet that what you have is a SHARKBITE fitting that is for your temporary water supply - it does spin and the fitting is easily removed with a special $1 tool

When you have final fitting crimped or expanded type it won't spin.

I second the guess that its a sharkbite fitting.

Don't even need that. I've used a plain old adjustable wrench. All you're trying to do is pull back on that plastic ring -- the wrench allows y8u Don't I that. Done it, MANY TIMES. --174.234.xxx.xx

PEX Question (by DJ [VA]) Posted on: Feb 21, 2019 2:50 PM

Whoa, now you've got me worried again! It is the "final" valve for the kitchen sink, sticking out of the wall. No cabinets or sinks in yet, so I just put a tube on it to get water while we are working.

The shut-off valve goes inside the PEX tube, which has a smooth grey ring around it. Is that what a shark bite looks like?

It was not spinning at first, but the last time I turned it on, the valve spun around and water went everywhere except into the bucket below. LOL - I was soaked, too. We were cleaning up & getting ready to go anyway. --68.10.xxx.x

Yes the metal crimp on style can and will spin without leaking. if you are worried you could always crimp the crimp ring again to make sure its crimped down all the way. --74.74.xxx.xxx
