Just got news from yesterday landlord meeting
In mass , it is ilegal to ask birthday to applicants
Unless applicants warrantee to give out
Without the BOD , how could I do background check?
Any clues?

RB, my driver’s license has my date of birth. It doesn’t have an anniversary. Rose asked the question just fine.
Rose, are you able to pull credit reports? That can help with background checks. When I put my ad for tenants, I clearly put in the ad that interested parties should text names and month and day of birth, but NOT year.
I do not know for sure if this would pass fair housing, but I make it clear I am not asking for year. Month and day gives me enough info to differentiate between Joe Smith born 4/22 and Joe Smith born 2/29.
Now I am going to have to check with other landlords in my area, to see how they handle that before I screen another set of tenants. In my application process, I want that information before I give out the address to the property. --70.92.xxx.xxx |

How on earth does the government expect someone to do a proper background check or criminal check without DOB?
Can you still get SSN?
Some of these laws make no sense.

I do not put birthdate on my rental application, but if we get to the point that I’m interesting in running a background and credit check, I inform the prospect that I need date of birth for this reason. Or as others have said, you can also get it from their license. No one has ever refused to provide a DOB when I’ve asked. If they did refuse, then I would know that they are not someone I’d want as a tenant anyways. --24.147.xx.xxx |

I was going to say the same thing as Ken [NY] - you can't ask "how old are you" but you can ask what their DOB is.
Maybe MA stated differently now but that just doesn't make sense since you need that information for proper background checks.
