Someone in either my brownstone or the one adjoining mine poured gasoline down a drain. The pea-trap in my basement bedroom was incorrectly installed and the smell of gas permeated the building. The fire department was called and in the course of locating the pea-trap tore up my bedroom walls and flooring. My clothes and linens were covered with wall and flooring debris. The groceries I had in my room were destroyed . I haven’t been allowed to re-enter my bedroom to sort through my possessions. I took photos before I left when this happened. There are over 10 renters in these two residences and I don’t know if the fire department will identify the gas-pouring culprit. I’m worried about my things being stolen while I’m evacuated. The other bedrooms in my brownstone are rented to 5 other people and are still occupied. A repair has already been completed on the plumbing. How long does my landlord have to clean the debris from my bedroom and repair the walls and flooring? Do I have a right to enter my bedroom to sort through my things to protect them from further damage (from the clean-up and repair crew) or theft. Am I due compensation for the damage to my things, the hotel expenses I’ve incurred? Who is responsible to compensate me, the landlord because the pea-trap was incorrectly installed or the resident who poured gasoline down the drain? I have no renter’s insurance.

You'll want get renter's insurance. Very cheap insurance, your automobile carrier will often offer it.
My thought is the person who vandalized the unit by pouring gasoline down the drain is responsible. The fire department might have the say on when you may re-enter your unit. Glad you and everyone are OK.
Sewer gasses and gasoline are not a good combination. Nor is bringing gasoline into a multi-family building in the first place. What an idiot! That contaminated a lot of water and air. Made a lot of mess for neighbors. Sorry this happened to you. --70.92.xxx.xxx |

You can try suing them both. The landlord has to pay for lodging for you until the FIREMEN or code enforcement say you can go back in. It has been my impression over the years that firemen can overdo it with those axes and hoses. Had someone like that here who came with an ambulance for my mother and wanted to rip out the electric stair climber to get her out on a stretcher. She didn't need a stretcher and I got her out. But you get the point. The P trap is under the sink and it should have been possible to find it as the source of the smell without ripping up walls. Things like this are why people should have renter's insurance. All would be paid for if you had that. It's hard to get gas fumes out of clothing but it will come out with a couple washings. I saw someone pour gas into a storm drain once. That went all over the neighborhood. --173.61.xxx.xx |

You need to work with the fire department in determining when you can retrieve your possessions.
It sounds as if it will be some time before your residence is livable again. You should start looking for new lodging now. Depending on state law and your lease you are probably due back your security deposit. And possibly any unused rent that you have paid up. i.e. The rest of the month.
Look to your lease in regards to your temporary lodging. In my leases it would be the tenants responsibility because they would be looking to use their renters policy. My lease specifically mentions the tenants responsibility for getting their own policy. The damage would be out of my control (not caused by me). --70.16.xxx.xxx |

6 x 6 you are right it could have been a tub p trap. Gas would remain in the bend of the trap and stink everything up. I was almost thinking that someone would have had to pour it in her p trap to get that result and maybe the landlord wants her to leave and did it or someone she knows who was actually in her residence. --173.61.xxx.xx |

It’s sounds like several people are displaced because of this. Your immediate solution might be to contact your local Red Cross.They can take care of what you need right now. Your LL might not be required to make sure you have a place to stay . I can almost guarantee they aren’t required to take care of your stuff. Obviously this would be easier for you if you had renters insurance but there is no reason to rub salt on that wound. Going forward I don’t think anyone will have to remind you to get that policy.
