Maybe it is because most of my applicants are young adults, but I've decided I need to add two more things to my application.

Preferred name (because so many use something other than a given name)

Preferred Pronoun - because so many of my young adults seem to want to use something other than what is on their ID.

I get so confused when the ID says one thing and they go by something else!

Am I the only one experiencing this? --64.251.xxx.xxx

Barb -- explain again why you want to get "chummy" with the applicants? Don't set up right out of the gate and be BEST BUD'S. Use the name on the ID just like any business!!!! --99.103.xxx.xxx

Not getting chummy.

It makes life easier when sending a personalized email to use their preferred name/pronoun. Most of the ones not using their given name are confused and need to be in mental health treatment. They react better if you use their preferred name and pronoun.

As Brad says, we are in the people business. My application already says utter names used. The older people think of maiden names. Young people don’t know what that means in manny cases.

The chart field in the database at work is now preferred name. That is what they use as the term now.

Maybe it is my association with the U, and all the kids who are transsexual, pansexual etc. When you start by asking their preferred name and pronoun, it helps to keep their attitude positive. --64.251.xxx.xxx

Let me clarify my mental health treatment comment:

I agree that some of them are part of the LGBTQ community. Many don’t know exactly where they fit in. How many of us knew who we were at 20? Some are just abused and lost. Some are trying out different persona to determine their identity. A trained mental health professional will assist in that,

Some are afraid to be who they are, and need help to be confident with themselves.

I don’t care what name and pronoun they use, but if I have it on file and they don’t pay, when they end up in courts, they are easier to find if I know their preferred name and pronoun.

Plus, it really does make people more positive to use their preferred name and pronoun.

Are the rest of you not seeing any applicants using names other than on their ID?

Have you never seen show excited someone gets when they figure out who they are? --64.251.xxx.xxx

I don't quite under why you need a third person pronoun. How do you find yourself addressing them in the third person? --199.247.xx.xx

Plenty, or my real name? Plenty for online stuff, but in real life, that is not my name. Once upon a time I used my name, had to re earn my 3 stars with the new "handle" But I can see that being an issue near campus and with students. Suppose same would be for women who are married and use maiden names, or hyphenated names or ex husband's name, or who knows all the different versions. --184.206.xxx.xxx

I think if you start asking for a preferred pronoun, you're obligating yourself to use it. Then what happens if you slip up and use the wrong one? Drama! --74.37.x.x

I have a number of students using "They/Their" as their preferred pronoun.

As for slipping up, yes, it happens. Sometimes drama happens. Even if you don't ask, drama happens because people expect you to know what pronoun to use.

I had to explain to a student recently that my brain used context clues and that when dressed with lace, close form fitting clothing and such, even in dark colors, my brain processed that is female and to use the female pronoun. If the student wants people to use "they", the student needs to wear a label (which was their choice to use - a nice big 3 in button) or to dress less obviously female.

Many of the students have taken to using their preferred pronoun as part of their signature file (in the email) and to wearing a button with their preferred pronoun.

I keep a spreadsheet with all my tenant names, contact info, and lease ending dates. I just need to add a column with preferred name/pronoun. No big deal. --131.151.xx.xx

In Missouri? I thought this gender expression situation was just in California, NewYork, etc. YouTube Jordan Peterson on this preferred pronoun business. Too many options, it seems, not enough difinitiveness! You may have hit it on the head Barb.... who knew who they were at 20? It is even harder to know now, it seems with infinite options... I think I read that Facebook wanted to give people the option of self identification, and it was something like 700 options .... too many options to reference, so Facebook settled on maybe 3, I believe it said. How has this happened? No one struggling anymore / working hard in life...... to much time for navel gazing? I can’t say. Bless us all. No disrespect intended. --66.87.xxx.xx
