I remember some landlords had some tips on how to clean mildew from caulking by make a paste mixture and letting it set overnight and there were some other tips given.

I searched and couldn't find the topic/posting. Does anyone remember either the topic or when it was posted?

Thanks.

How much caulking do you need to clean? Might be faster just to caulk over it. --24.147.xx.xxx

If a bleach pen doesn't work you need to just recaulk.

I saturate shop towels with bleach and leave them tucked in over the caulk overnight and it works as well as a bleach pen. --216.186.xxx.xx

Re-caulking over mold is like wearing new clothes without taking a shower.

The best process is:

1. Remove old caulking and clean the area.

2. Place a bleach soaked towel over the area.

3. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes.

4. Re-caulk. Use mold resistant caulk.

5. Ventilate. Poor ventilation will bring new mold for sure. --99.59.x.xxx

Re-caulking is what I was going to suggest as it typically seems to get behind the caulk but I might try the bleached towel method next time. --73.120.xx.xxx

I agree with Fred. It's not much more work to recaulk than to attempt to clean....and it will look and "BE" 10x better.

Be careful with bleach for two reasons.

1) It can easily damage/stain surfaces, especially textiles

2) Bleach (sodium hypochlorite) fumes (if above 1 ppm) can be corrosive to the lungs. Most products containing bleach are below this level and will not cause issues, but using straight bleach in a confined area can be hazardous.

3) Full strength bleach can burn the skin

If you must use bleach, either use a foaming type or have the area well-ventilated and don't stay in the area for long periods.

You can try the bleach, mildew removers, etc. But re-caulk it with some of the new and better caulks, not silicone and it will look so much better. --108.4.xxx.xx

Everyone, thanks for the good info.

LindaJ[NJ], what are the newer and better caulks rather than silicone? --99.165.xx.xxx

I actually use a good exterior caulk like Quad brand.

Harder to work wit, needs 24 hours to dry. And has a little smell to it for a day or two.

But never any mildew problems.

Second choice is Dap 3.0 --73.152.xx.xxx

Silicone was the best years ago. But it does mildew, it will yellow and nothing sticks to it, so even if it is removed you have a heck of a time getting rid of the residue to recaulk.

I have been using Lexel. So far so good, but it has only been a year. It does not yellow, you can even add caulk or caulk over it with more. It does not seem to mildew so far anyway. It comes in clear and white. A little pricey, almost $10 per tube. Lots of good reviews too.

Polyseamseal, Big stretch. If I go with silicone, I use a siliconized latex. --108.4.xxx.xx
