I have one specific Smith Cast Iron gas forced hot water furnace with chimney vent seems to collect more soot, both inside the cast iron "fingers" and the flue.. The same chimney has 2 other different boilers and water heaters connected. Common setting for old apt here..
None other Smith or other brand gas fired boiler has this problem. I wonder what is causing the soot accumulating.. Every year I have to open up and clean the soot with a long steel wire brush.. If I neglect to do that, enough soot will accumulate the fingers, create blockage and the fire will lick out from front and trigger the hi-limit. --71.232.xxx.xxx |

Shut the furnace down and remove, clean, and replace the burners one at a time. Use a wire brush on the little vent tops. Then stand the burner on end with open end down and tap on concrete floor to allow dirt to escape. If that doesn't work, call a pro. These burners are adjustable for air/gas mixture which should be left to a pro. Good luck. I have a few 30+ year old gas furnaces and NEVER had to have them adjusted. Should see nice quiet blue flames. Yellow flames indicate a problem. --73.215.xxx.xx |

Elliot,
(Tenant Life Style Issue)
Lack of Housekeeping.
$10.00 bucks says All of your return vents
show the same problem. (Soot covered)
Ends up collecting at the filter / furnace.
Soot can collect on the Flame Sensor also, impairing it.
Also, how close is the Dryer to the Furnace ? (think lint)

Can not burn all the fuel, clean out the burners with shop vacuum then try turning the air shutters open, if they are already wide open you have to reduce fuel thru the office - easiest way is lower manifold pressure thru gas valve.
