We just found out that a spiteful former tenant took several parting shots at a granite counter top in one of upscale kitchens, and we are still in a bit of shocked disbelief.....
Briefly put, is there anyone out there who has successfully gone through repairing such a nightmare?
Many thanks for any and all responses.

Is the damage all in one are?, say about 12-18 inches from the the sink?
If so, you may be in luck. We have had a few cases where we have successfully used a formica cutting board (see Amazon) to cover damage by careless tenants cutting and, or, chopping scars into granite tops.
Surprisingly, most prospective renters accept such a board as just part of the counter's original design. And not as a repair.
Good luck

Hey Peter of NH
Please give us more details on your technique of using glass to address this problem.
Thank you;

Granite isn’t cheap. What exactly did they do. I would file a police report , if intentional. I would sue and place a claim on their credit report. --68.192.xxx.xxx |

Answer to Dan's question of "What did they do?"
The damage appears to be the result of a single powerful blow from a hammer. It is about 3/4 inch deep at its center and radiates outward in every direction for about 4 to 5 inches until it disappears.
Thanks for asking.

I'm not a granite expert but I think there are most likely stress cracks as a result of the hammer blow which will require a large portion of the counter to be removed. It might be possible to do a semi OK repair using epoxy & granite chips or possibly cutting out a portion of the counter & adding an insert.
IMO you need to have a reputable granite installer make an on site visit to determine your options. --96.237.xx.xx |

You may choose to do a repair (cutting the damaged section out and fitting a new piece it its place - if you can find a matching piece). This repair idea requires a skilled pro with the right tools, and depending on your experience, may or may not be for you.
If the damaged area is fairly large, your options are going to be limited.
Covering the damage won't fly. --99.59.x.xxx |

Call a grantie install place and asked. You real question is who pays for repair or replace? You. You do. Then you figure out if you want to hold the responsible person responsible and how. --99.203.xx.xxx |

I like the idea of covering it rather than replacing it. Fancy heavy glass cutting board, not clear, and glue it to the counter. --50.82.xxx.xx |

If it's an upscale unit you need to replace everything. Any type of patch won't look right. Sorry, but sometimes that's how the counter top crumbles.
Granite has decreased in price. I see Home Depot advertises some very basic versions for $35 per square foot. Plus installation and removal. --73.242.xx.xx |

For a damage cabinet top I came up with the idea of finding a really nice wooden cutting board and gluing or screwing it down to the countertop as if it belonged there. Not sure how you would fasten something to the granite but I'm sure there is a glue of some kind. I suggest you put a similar hole in the guys wallet. --73.248.xxx.xxx |

Melodie,
Bummer. Get a pro in there to consider filling cracks with granite dust and epoxy.
In low end homes we have covered Formica burns by gluing 2 or 4 thin granite 12x12 tiles. My granite guy takes the sink cut out and makes a legit cutting board.
A pro might help you cut out one section. Or consider a mixed use look by cutting out the granite and inserting a wood top. As seen on Pintrest!:)
My lease is clear: if you don’t have it in print with their signature the judge does not have to allow it.
-res must restore to move in condition ready for the next res
-we bill on REPLACEMENT cost
-res is responsible for damage caused by themselves or guests, invited or uninvited.
-I have move IN pics AND their signature on the above clauses AND on the written move IN inspection form which are evidence for court.
Get some good pics to show the damage.
Get some granite pros to check this. If you say it spiders out I guess it will only get worse with time. Beyond the spiders is already fractured but has not opened up yet. It will.
Charge high and get the repair done at your own price. The res COULD HAVE hired someone at a discount but they left the problem for you.
Another concern - if they would do this is there other violent damage?

My granite guy says the whiter the granite the more brittle it is.

Since you have granite counter tops, I have to assume that you have a class A place and have class A tenants with garnish able incomes. Time to conduct some wallet training.
Where I absolutely do like the former residents message in the form of a parting shot, they are absolutely allowed to act in an irresponsible manner - in just that are also allowed to be responsible for the results of that parting message --72.23.xxx.xx |
