Just FYI, you may want to wait out a bit to file tax return if you use TurboTax.

I posted a question to TurboTax community. It looks like people recommend you wait until mid-Feb because there is some glitches about how TurboTax handles QBI 20% deduction

Good advice Matt. I never do my taxes right out of the gate. I've received too many late statements and I don't trust that all the software updates are always done in time to file so quickly.

I plan it not to get much of a return anyway so it doesn't really matter to me. Might as well be patient and check, double check, then check again. --24.20.xxx.xxx

Definitely a year to wait for the patch monkeys to get patches done. --70.92.xxx.xxx

I sometimes have it done by April 15, but mostly I ask for an extension, then dog it after that anyway. --108.4.xxx.xx

Pay your estimated tax by April 15 with an automatic extension.

Wait till Oct 14 to file your 1040.

There will be no penalty if your estimate was not short. --99.59.x.xxx

I typically don't do my taxes "right away" either .. last year I was in a class and the instructor said "if you use TurboTax for your taxes I highly suggest you do NOT for 2018 - get an accountant. It's going to be a nightmare".

I may use it but it certainly won't be anytime soon. --69.201.xx.xxx

I’m almost done reading the NOLO PUBLISHER’s book, Every landlord’s tax deduction guide, by Stephen Fishman, jd. Got about four things marked that I’ll need to go on the NOLO website to check.

As of the printing of the book, which I bought late December, the IRS still hadn’t figured out a couple of forms. Possibly were waiting for input from Congress. Gee, wondered if congress figured it out? --70.92.xxx.xxx

I have entered all my information into TaxAct. It matches exactly the refund amount from my own Excel spreadsheet, so it looks like the patches are in. --24.252.xx.xxx

I'm hiring a CPA (for only the second time). That way I have expert opinion on how to interpret it. Next year I'll do it myself the way she did it this year. --204.210.xxx.xxx

My siblings and I rent out our homestead. We just divide the income and expenses and file individual Schedule E's with our 1040's. So should we/can we utilize the QBI? TurboTax explanation is murky at best...seems to suggest that maybe we could and maybe not?!?? Is this really a "trade or business"?
