I have a storage space with 6 windows.

Want to put some insulation because the windows is really old and I don’t want to pay extra for heating.

I don’t care about the look. No one will see it anyway.

I was looking to install the window kit from the Home Depot or use heavy duty plastic sheeting.

Any advice will be really appreciated. :)

You could make frame of 1x2 lumber to fit inside the window casing. Put the window kits on both sides of the frame. Then put the frame into the window casing using the strips of foam to make a friction fit. --64.222.xxx.xxx

How about large sheet of insulated stiff panel... cut to size of window. --99.203.xx.xxx

Don't care about the look? Cover both sides of the window with insulation, then plywood.

Windows are big gaping holes in the insulation envelope. Not needed in a storage area. --173.233.xxx.xxx

Cut a piece of bubble wrap to the size of the glass. Spray a small amount of water onto the glass. Apply bubble wrap. Supposedly, it will stay stuck. I haven't tried it yet myself, but I learned it on the internet, so it must be true. --107.141.xx.xxx

Yes, the bubble wrap will stick, but that only insulates the windows and not the leaking frame. If you don't need the light, cut a foam insulation board (2 inch) to fit right in the window, caulk or foam it into the area, frame it out if need be. Even stuffing insulation into the area will help, but don't compress it too much as it loses it R value.

If you need the light, heavy clear plastic even if not perfectly clear (the stuff in the kits is very light weight and used more to still be able to look out the window. You can put the plastic on the inside or the outside. If they are really leaky, the outside is better since the wind will blow it against the building instead of into the building. You could even do plexiglass sheets as a storm window, but that is more expensive. You need to leave an air gap between the windows and plastic for a small insulative value. --108.4.xxx.xx

I agree with the clear plastic - if you still want natural light. But also remove the trim around the window - I bet you find empty spaces. Fill them with foam and reinstall trim. Pretty easy, hugely effective. --68.10.xxx.x

you could do heavy plastic or foam and leave a gap between it and window. --73.120.xx.xxx

I use those plastic window kits on my own home with drafty windows here and there. They work fine but if you want the space to be warm it has to be heated. --73.248.xxx.xxx
