So CA is proposing taxing text messages, though I am not sure how that will work since most cell phone plans allow unlimited calling and texting.

Anyways, I want to see people taxed when they request a call back (to see your rental), then never answer when you call.

The tax will also be retroactive for five past years. Heard on Fox this morning that there are zero Repubs in the CA legislature now to stop any of this nonsense due to redistricting and ballot harvesting where they go to homes of registered voters and collect the absentee ballot filled out and take them where they have to go. Ballot harvesting is supposedly illegal. This is like a crazy takeover --73.248.xxx.xxx

The criminals that run our State are looking for ways to increase revenues so that can keep their mistress in style, have a large slush fund to live the extravagant life and maintain their insurance premiums against getting caught with the fingers in the cookie jar! I've seen an old mayor swindle $30,000 for himself as opposed to the payer being responsible for $250,000 in fee's. --47.156.xx.xx

Ever looked at your phone bill?

There are a dozen or more different taxes. One of them is a 911 fund.

So what's another tax on texts?

BTW, NJ is the fastest state to copy CA when it comes to taxing the silent majority. Two peas in a pod. --99.59.x.xxx

In NY we try to call them fees! And those fees are on the big companies so the little guy doesn't have to pay it. So guess what the company does.. put a line on their bill for the fee or just hide in the bill amount.

The biggest problem arises when over half the voters (the takers) stand to gain from the tax. Of course they will vote to keep it. --108.4.xxx.xx

Typical liberal governess. Telling us they're trying to help us common folks while reaching for our wallets.

I'm surprised they didn't promote this by saying it will help children and the elderly.

This is one of those stories that the media ran with because it is click-bait. There was never a real push to tax texts in California. It was proposed specifically to address the problem with spam texts and calls that we're all getting now. Phone companies won't do anything about telemarketers and spammers because they profit from them significantly. Therefore, the CPUC "proposed" this but, in my opinion, with very little intention of it actually going anywhere. The FCC has had "issues" with not doing what is best for us end users recently -- and this all relates to that.

In any case, this "proposal" has already been abandoned (as originally planned, in my opinion).

But, again, it wasn't as much a "tax on texts" thing as a "Hey -- how about we force the cell companies to stop profiting from spammers and telemarketers" thing. Which is a real problem that does need to be solve, but the FCC refuses to take action on (or allow state Public Utilities Commissions like the CPUC to take action on).

Long story short: there is much more to this story than the click-bait title of "California wants to tax texts" that has been going around. As usual.
