Delta is banning emotional support animals from flights that are more than eight hours long after an uptick in reports of animals defecating, urinating and biting other passengers. Also banning animals under 4 months of age because of CDC vaccinations policy. I know we are not Delta, but maybe there is hope on the horizon for some sanity on this issue.

Rents,

Interesting.

8 hours is still a long to hold it in! Add the 2 hours required for international flights (8 hours is not domestic) and the poor pooch's bladder is easily at 10+ hours!

Pets wearing diapers is not unusual, especially if the pet is an older animal.

My 10 year old boxer was wearing doggy diapers at night time for awhile when he was having some medical issues. --96.47.xxx.xx

Before this thread veers off too far into the wild blue yonder, I'll simply agree with this statement: "maybe there is hope on the horizon for some sanity on this issue".

The whole argument for ESAs from a logical perspective seems to collapse on itself when we consider that some of the most stressful, noisy, uncomfortable, crowded public accommodations (hospitals, restaurants, grocery stores, hotels) are mostly exempt from ESA rules, but the most controlled, low stress, least crowded/noisy place (aka one's home) must allow them 100% of the time.

If you're going in for surgery....suck it up and drive on appears to be the answer. Otherwise, if you plan to chill at home with some wine and light jazz you must be allowed to have 3 pit bulls. Someone much smarter than I can try to explain that. --173.20.xxx.xxx

David M are you for real?????

Planes have change tables in the rest rooms to clean the kids bottom and put on new diaper.

PETS can't be brought into that area and put on that table-- seriously??????

Tell us all WHAT culture slits the diaper so the poo comes out? that's Bull. --99.103.xxx.xxx

NE, perhaps I overstated how "upset" I get. I find it very bizarre that it's acceptable for a dog to do its number 1 and number 2 business on public property but a child must wear a diaper. Just a comparison that's all.

myob, a lot of this are natural, that doesn't mean it's appropriate to do in public.

Where is the emotional line?

We have pets in our home for emotional reasons - companionship, joy of a furry friend happy to see you on arival, lowers blood pressure to pat them...

I think EVERY pet animal is for emotional support.

Brad: The "emotional line" is whether or not a person is considered "disabled" by legal definition. That is the difference.

The PROBLEM is that this line is very hard to define and very easy for someone to cheat around.

I have no problem with real emotional support animals for people who are disabled. But my GUESS is that the number of actual people like that is probably at 10% (or less) of all people who have Emotional Support Animal documentation out there. :(

I don't understand why requiring some type of dog diapers for animals, especially those that have to be in a public place for more than three or four hours at a time.

If people are going to use this idiotic law to their advantage the least they can do is make them jump through a few legal hoops...

I am not disabled. There is a difference, but not a lot of people realize it.

I’m all for any measures that make it more difficult for an untrained dog to be where Scooter and I go.

All that said, ESAs in housing and on planes are very different. Pets do contribute to a positive quality of life for many people. I just want to mandate training. --64.251.xxx.xxx

Indeed -- the problem with ESAs is abuse of the system. If training were required like for Service Animals (even on a lesser scale, of course), then we might be able to eliminate most of these issues.

Unfortunately, the airlines are likely our only hope. No one cares if a ESA chews the baseboard in a rental house but most will care if one is seated next to them on a 4 hr flight. Lets hope they keep pushing it. --50.77.xxx.xxx

CGB- you're right, it's sad but true. They should care because it affects the cost of renting. Landlords have to make up the potential damages somehow. If you can't cover your losses by charging the individual then everyone winds up paying more as kind of an ESA tax.

I don't get it. Why should others be forced to take on more risk because someone has special requirements. Sure, you can charge for damages caused by their animals but the chances of collecting are slim and costly and time consuming. It's unfortunate a landlord's right to choose their risks is being taken away. And their will be consequences all the way around. --216.186.xxx.xx

I will be glad when some of this politically correct insanity ends. I hate dogs in public places even as I love my 2 dogs. I hate hearing, "I have a support animal" from prospective non-tenants. For those of you who hate poop, don't go to San Francisco. The streets there are covered with used needles and human excrement. --216.23.xxx.xx
