I have chance to get a fairly large amount of NOS 3 tab shingles. They are stored in an unheated space. I am guessing that they are 5 to 10 years old. NOS= new old stock. Since it's free it may be for me. What say you?

I'd ask your roofer if he/she would honor their warranty if you use them. If they say no, I would not do it. Maybe keep a few bundles for minor repairs though. --99.92.xxx.xxx

The question is - HOW were the shingles stored? On a flat surface?

Open a bundle and check the shingles, are they stuck together? are they easy to separate without tearing? Torn shingles are worthless.

No roofer will give you material warranty, and in this case, the mfg may deny warranty as well. But that should not discourage you from using these shingles if they pass the test.

I would wait for warmer weather, when the shingles are softer, more flexible and easier to handles.

FREE doesn't always mean GOOD DEAL, BUT free in good condition could be a found treasure. --99.59.x.xxx

Thanks for the quick replies.

I would be the installer. Would be done over 1 layer of 3 tab roofing. Being in the "second hand world", NOTHING comes with a warranty.

Stored dry and flat. About half [or more] seem to be in the original packaging, not that that means a lot being stored for so long.

Did not get close enough to do a thorough inspection which of course includes seeing if they are strongly stuck together, though with the heat of recent year or two I realize that that is a big concern.

RB - never heard that phrase before "Parachute warranty". --74.105.xxx.xxx

If you feel OK with roof over in NJ with your snow-- why not? Unheated space but out of sun and weather go for it.

Roof warranty-- I'm still laughing!!!!! --99.103.xxx.xxx

Myob,

Yes, roof warranties are probably the biggest joke in this business. When a roofer talks about his warranty and how is going to come back and fix any problem,...'pleeeese give me break'. I have called many roofers to come back and fix a small problem and most of them are out of business, in jail or nowhere to be found. --68.63.xxx.xxx

I agree with Roy on the warranty. Given the fact that the shingles most likely will not seal properly do to old age I would not risk it,for that is an awful lot of work if you have to tear it off and redo it. I would personally tear off the old roof first as well because you need to see if you have damaged wood under neath, and if you ever have a leak it makes it much more difficult to trace through two layers of shingles and last but not least that is a lot of added weight and puts extra stress on your rafters. --73.120.xx.xxx
