This isn’t OT. First line on my screening criteria. If you arrive to a showing in your pajamas, you are automatically declined. I have been severely ill and on the way to the ER and still managed to put on pants. The shopping season has brought the PJ People out in force and we are surrounded here in Western Mass. I can’t even go to Walmart anymore, it’s a jammie freak show. Yesterday I saw three generations walking down the street together all decked out in their bedtime best.

While I tend to agree with you -- you have to realize that it doesn't necessarily represent the "person that wouldn't bother to put on pants to go to the ER" crowd like you might thing. The reality is that this is the "current fashion trend" for many people, unfortunately.

I'm sure there were landlords 50-60 years ago that went "If you show up wearing these stupid Bell Bottoms, you are automatically declined." It would have seemed like a completely stupid thing at the time -- but the reality is it became a very large fashion trend that a wide variety of people wore.

Again, don't get me wrong -- I hate it too and think it is ridiculous. But I can also see that it has spread to more than just the original crowd. I've seen some people doing it that really surprise me. It's just becoming "the new fad" for a bit, unfortunately.

But, yeah, I still ding them a few "points" in my head -- but it isn't an auto-decline any more as long as they are employed and otherwise pass (which, I'll admit, it still rare).

- John...

You're welcome to have any criteria you like, including dress code.

I used to have long hair in high school/early college. No doubt a 1950s/60s land lord would have thought me a hippie for not showing up with a crew cut, pressed slacks, and a long sleeve shirt and tie. The fact I had a 3.96 GPA and impeccable references would not have helped me. *sigh

Times they are a changin'. I don't wear my PJs in public, but yes, the "people of Wal-Mart" are....interesting, to say the least! --173.20.xxx.xxx

Those of us who grew up in the 60's and 70's rebelled against our parents' ideas of "proper dress." Suits, ties, hats on men and gloves for women, even bras for a while: all rejected.

Then during the 80's "designer" clothing became all the rage and we allowed it somehow...so now maybe the kids have rebelled against paying $$$$$ for a pair of jeans and just buy pjs! --50.82.xxx.xx

I don’t know. My kids are young adults and teenagers. I have never seen them, their friends or anyone at any of their schools dressed like that. What would happen if they showed up at school or work dressed like that? The people I’m seeing certainly aren’t young trendsetters anyway. More like the moms who don’t bother getting out of their PJs to put the kids on the bus.....and then picking them up at the end of the day still in the PJs. I must just say that I’ve noticed on trips to Canada that the public display of PJs disappears. You can go there all week and everyone is outside in their day clothes. --174.199.xx.xxx

Unfortunately pajamas are also court attire for many tenants in my big city and some are torn to expose areas that swimwear would cover at a public pool (disgusting), these folks spend 30-45 minutes going thru the metal detector lines thru the buildings, always a chuckle from the bunch I hang with cause they talk the longest and still lose. --76.188.xxx.xx

I spent a good part of the day last Friday at a tire store buying and having installed a new set of snow tires. A lady came in wearing her PJs, and spent several hours there waiting for her work to be done. I just don't get the attitude. However, I pointed this out to my 33 year old daughter once, and she said "what's the big deal? I do it all the time." So I guess I just don't get this new generation. --75.166.xxx.xxx

I have pajama sets from Brooks Brothers and Derek Rose, a wool robe by Pendleton and leather slippers. My mailbox is as far as I venture out in this attire.

I have yet to see a public pajama wearer in similar loungewear.

Public PJ wears seem to be loyal to the fleece bottoms and dingy t shirt type. The fleece bottoms must be adorned with a goodly amount of hair and crumbs. Not a good look IMHO. --72.172.xxx.xx

A matching tie with the PJ's would add a classy look!!!

HOWEVER as I was channel surfing the other day I see on QVC or EVINE one of the sells reps in a Christmas suit.

It was red with Christmas themed designs AND it looked like a PJ's!!!

Dress for Success!!! How successful are the PJ wearing crowd at Walmart? Not sure! Does it mean that someone driving a Mercedes, Porchsa, Lexus are wealthy or in debt? Or do they enjoy a great drive? Judging a book by it cover???

Some are great reads and others are boring...

The American standard is blue jeans, tee shirt, baseball cap and to me it is upsetting and a very low standard. PJs is as low as its gets for me

A while ago a colleague commented that she has never ever seen me without a button down collar and she didn't understand why I travel wearing a blazer.

I was taught long ago that you can go anywhere wearing a Blazer and khakis and that IS the way I use to hitchhike in the 70's. Believe me it works

Heck, my work clothes for playing in mud are still old khakis and old button down collar shirt

Brooks Brothers or Jos. A Banks style never goes old. --73.182.xxx.xxx
