So this is my personal house. It's over 60 years old. Here its slab foundation and I have had moisture come thru concrete thru my wood floors. I did the floors 3 yrs ago and now in about 10 different spots its rotted and peeling. Didnt buckle. I used moisture barrier glue.

I had seen efforencence in various area and should have done more research 3 yrs ago.

I need to seal the floor and then thinking going with tile. (Wood like).

Advice on sealing concrete floor? Have seen and put in red guard under the carpets no idea if it worked or not. --64.233.xxx.xxx

The best way is to get between the cement and the outdoors - in your case you want to get under the slab. that may not be very easy so you need to trench around the perimeter and place drain tubing with the holes facing up all the way around sending the low spot to a underground rock pile 100 feet away from and lower than the house. --76.188.xxx.xx

Do you have a utility room you can put a sump pump in? Or can you build a closet for one? That would help. Old slab like that probably doesn't have plastic underneath it like new slabs do. --174.201.x.x

The best water proof material for concrete and masonry is a cement called THORO SEAL. You mix it with water and apply with a wide paint brush.

To do the job, the wood floor has to be pulled out. --99.59.x.xxx

No plastic underneath. What would sump pump do? There is no basements.

Yeah the entire floor will be removed...and going with tile for that reason. --172.58.xx.xxx

A sump pump will draw water to a lower point and send it out of the house. --50.107.xxx.xxx

Don't think for a moment that tile will hold better than wood if you don't water proof the slab. This is why you need Thoro-seal, you can brush it on or roll it on the slab. The slab must be clean, and when the Thoro-seal dries up, it's part of the slab. Follow the instructions.

Where to find it: Building supply places, masonry outlets or online. Thoro-seal is not very expensive, worth every penny.

Sump pump...never had water in the house..moisture thru slab.

Thoro seal...will look into it. Different than red guard... --172.58.xx.xx

Are your floors sweating? That's different. A dehumidifier will handle that. If it's coming through the slab, thorough seal will stop that, but it won't stop the sweating. --50.107.xxx.xxx
