New York City Raids Condo Building in Crackdown on Airbnb Rentals

In one of the largest actions against short-term rentals, city issues violations to apartment owners in a Midtown luxury building

Nov. 11, 2018 8:49 a.m. ET

A team of New York City law-enforcement officers swarmed a Manhattan condominium last month, issuing 27 notices of violations for illegal hotel use in one of the largest crackdowns on short-term rentals such as those listed on Airbnb.

The raid at the Atelier, a 46-story Midtown luxury tower, may be a sign of what’s to come. New York and other cities are seeking to limit short-term rentals that can run afoul of local laws designed to limit hotel-style stays in residential buildings. --73.215.xxx.xx

They shouldn't think they can get away with not paying The Man his slice... They take their hotel-motel tax seriously. And all the other bureaucracy and fees and permits (and did I mention fees?) attached to running a hotel. --96.46.xxx.xx

Besides loss to tax income the NYC hotel lobby has been after this for some time. It does upset the regular tenants. --107.77.xxx.xx

It is the same thing with the yellow cab drivers in New York getting upset over Uber. Uber and Airbnb aren't going anywhere, but they will definitely be regulated. Nobody likes to see anybody get a head and that's what Airbnb and Uber do. It allows the common man to get ahead a little bit. --174.201.x.xx

I bet et all fours kill the value of taxi medallions. The new groups may have car leasing plans that seem to be akin to furniture rentals and anchor down the lessor to almost servitude --107.77.xxx.xx

Frank - a close friend recently told me that NYC medalions (right to run a taxi) are now valued at under 200,000. They were once worth around 1 million. Also, I saw a story earlier this year about the high suicide rate among medallion owners. Many are financed and Uber and Lyft caused these medallion owners to be "upside down". --73.215.xxx.xx

Unfortunately, but fortunately, the medallion owners versus the Uber and lift drivers is just an example of the times. It's a perfect example of how capitalism works. And a perfect example of how we as landlords have to stay current with new ideas. Look at Blockbuster video, look at Sears, and now hotels and the yellow cabs. Who would've ever thought this stuff would have went away in a blink of an eye. That's how it is. The hotels take a butt kicking and the taxi drivers take a butt kicking, so do the taxing authorities Who are based on revenuesin the cities. They're going to go after somebody. That's what they do. --174.201.xx.xx

I feel for the people who live their. Condo's are probably not as bad but around here a lot of people Airbnb their beach houses.

I'd be pretty pissed if I paid my $2m for the house, and my $30k-$50k a year in property taxes only to have a constant stream of parties every weekend from the Airbnb.

Rent Control and monopolies are two major issues that work against capitalism.

Rent control is socialism, let the free market rents happen, it works well the FREE market...

What a great business idea UBER!!! Because of it it put many yellow cabs out of business, welcome to the free market.

AirBNB is a great concept, BNB's were a great idea until the next best thing was created the AirBNB, now hotels are having competition. THE FREE MARKET is working well!!!

The retail sales business is controlled by the Free Market! Sears is a prime example of what happens when a happy does not change with the times. And there are more Sears stores to close. Look at the success of Amazon....

The USPS has not changed with the shipping/mail industry of shipping small packages/letters and it has been in the negative for years. Sadly it still has not made the changes that are needed to making it a profitable business. Closing offices that are within a few miles of each other and reducing overhead. This is one industry that had a monopoly until other more innovative methods: emails and texting changed the USPS big time. The need to buy a stamp and mail a letter are no longer needed by a majority of people, now its INSTANT no waiting!!!

Redbox and netflix someone had a great vision and put Blockbuster out of business, it's the FREE MARKET.

Sadly Chrysler was helped out twice by the tax payers and they should not have been helped the first time. Did Chrysler look at the cars that were not selling and stop that line of cars. Did they do a redesign or improve the products the were making them money? Look at the repair history of many of the Chrysler lines they have horrible repair histories. The FREE MARKET did not prevail but socialism stepped in and it does not work.

Unfortunately health care is now a monopoly thanks to gov stepping in and this too will be a problem and its socialism. If you want FREE health care move to Canada or England and see what FREE healthcare actually costs. Taxes are extremely high and theres the problem, high taxes solves very little but causes a lot of problems.

NYC socialism at it finest. AND maybe NYC needs to cut their budget. But with blinders on they will not see this fact. What will NYC raid next??? OH YEAH what about you enjoying a nice extra large soft drink in your own home. Wait for it...

What will be the NEXT big innovation to change an industry????

FREE MARKET capitalism works Socialism does not work. Unfortunately the new house majority will not and can not understand that socialism does not work in these United States.

The basis of rent control along with a broken rental dispute process is not to control rents or improve the situation for tenants but bankrupt private rental housing providers. So when people start leaving rental housing then converting to other forms of housing they have not looked why that is happening. Any jurisdiction that has rent control the rental housing disappears where rents are always higher along with there is no longer a vacancy rate. So to fix two bad pieces of legislation they hammer those who need a income by renting out rooms. Multiple unit housing in Ontario is mainly condominiums along houses, townhouses and commercial not purpose built rental units as the previous put rent controls on every type of rental built or rented out. We do not what is going to happen in Ontario as the Doug Ford conservatives said Ontario is open for business. There is a reason why rent control does not apply to government owned rental units as the government knows rent control is unworkable. --147.194.xxx.xx

I agree Tom, the free market is wonderful! Isn't it amazing how many choice you get for the most mundane things (like light bulbs) and to think companies are always working to make things better and the customers happier. Milton Freeman says something like: in the history of mankind there is no other economic system that has helped the plight of the common man more than the free market economy. Nothing.

Robert, from the little I know, I agree, rent control damages, if not kills the housing stock. like a lot of government distortions: sound great, but result not great and then more government distortions take place to fix the problem they created.

In the US, government made a law that health insurance is a non-taxed benefit, only when provided by the employer. Now most people care less about the cost of a medical procedure as long as "it's covered". In the free market for veterinary care, right after they tell you the recommended medical procedure for your cat, they tell you how much it costs. --71.104.xx.x
