Looking at a duplex and both wash machine discharge hoses go to the sump pumps. The owner didn't know why but it was built in 1960 and I presume clay sewer pipes. There are numerous trees on the front the front lawn .

My theory is the sewer was backing up when they did loads of wash and had a handy man or makeshift idea to run the hoses to the sump pump. I don't know if this is even to code ? Any ideas or theories ? Thanks

I have a house like that. Some scratch their heads others say ok thats fine. Been years no real issues. No real reason its like that could have been like that to extend life of a septic. My house is on sewers at this point. --99.203.xx.xxx

Really hot water is not good for sump pumps. One of mom's tenants years ago did that and the sump pump would stop running due to overheating and water went all over. I got that fixed when I took over and the proper pipes installed and run into the sewer pipe. Our local codes require it to run into the sewer pipe. --73.178.xxx.xx

"Gray water" used to be discharged to the yard or storm sewer in lots of places. Not allowed most places today. --173.233.xxx.xxx

If you have a sewer charge, it might be saving money that way. Easier to drop it there than to plumb it sewer? Sump pumps are not allowed to go to sewers in a lot of my area since it overloads them. Maybe they thought they were being nice to the environment.

I have a bathroom sink, shower and laundry room going to a dry well to save the septic. It is gray water. Only the toilet goes to the septic. Accepted here.

Unless you have a reason to let the code people in to look, and it works fine, I would not worry about it, I wouldn't look into it, just go with it. --108.4.xxx.xx

Not weird! When we moved into our home 20 years ago, hubby decided (after checking with the township about gray water rules) to divert the water to the sump pump discharge, which is in a flower bed. We have a septic tank, so we divert during the dry/hot months, then switch back to the septic tank during the wet/cold months so that the lawn doesn't get too soggy when the water weeps out of the flower bed.

The washer is on the first floor and the sump pump in the basement - the water never hits the sump, as the washer discharge is teed to the sump pump pipe where it heads outside, about 2' below grade. There is a check valve that allows water from the sump to be discharged, but the washer water can't go down into the sump.

My flower bed is nice during the dry months! --71.175.xxx.x
