How many of you know someone who is frequently ill? We have an acquaintance who has to go to the hospital about every few months with something--either goes to a local walk in clinic or the hospital. Just got a call that he went to the doctor today and was told that he has walking pneumonia. A few weeks ago it was some kind of infection that caused his white blood cell count to skyrocket. He is 45 years old. He works for us. --24.233.xxx.xx

Münchausen syndrome

HIV/ AIDS

Sick house syndrome

All come to mind. Or, he/she could just be experiencing a rash of bad luck.

And, there is the possibility that this is all made up to get out of work when something better came along ... Nope, people wouldn’t do that. Would they? --70.92.xxx.xxx

We have a really poor tenant who must weigh 400 pounds. He is ALWAYS sick. Last I heard, he was needing a liver transplant or shunt, or something like that. He is on SS and either Medicare or Medicaid.

I feel bad for him. --76.189.xxx.xxx

Some of us are just born with a poor immune system. I have asthma, migraine disease, and an auto-immune. I would have died without serious antibiotics more than once. It happens. I'm not a smoker. I've been like this all my life. --64.251.xxx.xxx

What Busy or Hollis said. I also heard of someone who was always sick like that and she was found to have cancer. Except Munchhausen is pretending to be ill to get attention.

That was happening to one of my tenants and it turned out that she has some rare blood disorder that Polish people get and she needed a blood thinner. Also there is a Mediterranean mild leukemia that will cause a lof ot white blood cells to be present. Same tenant's husband has that. They don't actually need to have a Mediterranean last name as it's in his ancestray somewhere.

As Busy said, HIV/AIDS will cause an immune system problem but as I recall reading, it's usually catastrophic really fast. A lot of the early cases were a bird pneumonia and I think it was from having canaires in their homes. Read the book The River. It's all about how the AIDS epidemic began. It's a very thick book but you won't put it down.

I have several sick friends. Some have real conditions like heart and/or kidney transplants. Others have mental issues, real but they use it as a crutch so they don't have to work, they like the attention. And I also have tenants with made up conditions so they can sit on the sofa, stuff their face and accomplish nothing getting federal hand outs.

I know of and had many tenants with serious fatal conditions that they still managed to hold a job, take care of their kids and deal with hospitalization and treatment. Those are real hero's. Lasting another 5 years after diagnosis, given only one year to live... --47.156.xx.xx

I have a friend who is always telling me about her medical ills. She is at least 20 years younger than I am. I'm an old fogey so if anyone has a right to complain about aches and pains, it's me. I keep my mouth shut on it. What good does it do to whine about it?

This woman has been trying to years to get on disability. I recently learned she has been turned down NINE times.

She needs to give up and get an actual job.

I think lifestyle is a big factor in SOME people. Ever notice what some people have in their shopping cart? A short time ago I was behind someone with a full one and I don't think there was one healthy thing in it.Just junk food, all prepared processed stuff. Sodas,Cereals that were mostly sugar, chemical food coloring, everything out of a box or can. No vegetables or fruit. I felt sorry for the 2 kids that were with her.

I went 34 years w/o a virus (that I couldn't get rid of in a few hours) However most of you probably wouldn't take the supplements I take esp in my "virus kit" that I take in the first sign of a virus.

Then I take things for mitochondrial support,..PQQ, CoQ10 etc.

Also do the Linus Pawling Therapy.

People seem to think that genes are things that are written in stone and you can't change but one needs to know about the term "gene expression" That is you can influence many genes that deal with health from what you do.... --66.30.xx.xxx

I thought Munchhausen was causing someone close to you to become ill so you could get sympathy for caring for that person. I first heard of it when a mother caused her young child to become sick and hospitalized so she could get all the sympathy. --108.69.xxx.xxx

Landlord of the flies, what you are referring to is Münchausen by proxie. Münchausen syndrome is named after the Baron von Münchausen, a German soldier, known for playing up every injury to the hilt. If I understand correctly, it is most common in someone who has had a serious illness, especially in childhood, and became addicted to the attention from doctors, family, friends. As the illness is cured, or goes into remission, the person affected continues to seek attention through discussion of any and all medical issues, including ‘doctor-shopping’ trying to find a doctor who will find something, anything, wrong. And, at every family event, all of the family is regaled with tales of the affliction, over and over.

In television dramas it is portrayed in its most serious form, where the patient actually self-harms. It is considered an anxiety disorder, I believe. --70.92.xxx.xxx
