I'm considering the purchase of either a Nest Hello Video doorbell or a Ring video doorbell for our home.
I am not *all that* in terms of tech savvy -
Regarding technology, I'm not even sure I have WiFi (I have a cable internet connection with a router for my desktop, and I have a SmartPhone, which is a challenge now and then because I've upgraded from a flip phone--but I *think* I have WiFi--be gentle, I have skills in other areas of intelligence! LOLAM).
I'd appreciate your input about pros and cons and things I might not even realize about Nest vs Ring. Many thanks!

These are wifi required gizmos, so if you are not cozy with that level of tech stuff using a push button ding-dong would be so much easier, trick or treat. --76.188.xxx.xx |

FabricGal: The question would be whether or not that cable internet connection connected to your router provides a wireless connection or not. Often, it does, but it is possible that it doesn't either. I assume your desktop is connected to the router with a cable, correct?
You could look on the router -- often it will have a label on the bottom giving the WiFi "SSID" (which is the "name" of the wireless network) along with the password for that (assuming it has been left at the default). If you see that, then you likely have WiFi. These days, it is fairly standard with most cable internet setups.
Then, at least, you'd know if you have it now. If not, you could always add it fairly easily.

Can you use wifi on your phone to connect? or do you have a laptop or tablet that uses it? You might try to look for it on your phone and see if the phone finds one (and it isn't the neighbors).
What is your reason for getting the smart doorbell? Personally, I think all these "smart" things that use wifi (which means they are connected to the internet) are asking for trouble. So much we don't know about what information they can gather, until someone finds out years later.
Did you know the Onstar still tracks everything in your vehicle even if you don't subscribe. That includes oil changes, emissions, location etc. AND the data belongs to GM to use as they see fit. Only after digging around did I find that out!
Personally, I would like to find a non smart phone with a QWERTY keyboard for easy texting. Talk and text is all I want to do. I don't want apps, I don't watch movies, don't do banking etc with my phone. --108.4.xxx.xx |

Hi from one Gal to another! (I like fabric, too!)
Even if your desktop is connected to your router via cable, it is very easy to upgrade routers and get Wifi. The new routers come with pre-installed software that walk you through setting up your home network. The new router will still have a port for your plug in desktop. Get a router with enough range to prevent dead spots in your home. Be sure to keep the password protection on your router.

I'm with you LindaJ, I want a phone just for talk and text. I need one and so do my kids. Flip phones are too hard to use for texting. --173.173.xxx.xxx |

Both Ring and Nest will connect to a standard doorbell (the kind that go "ding-dong")
They both strongly recommend installing small wiring pieces into the doorbell chime, so you may need a handyman to help you with that.
Primary differences:
Ring: very cheap - if you want it to do motion activated recordings it is $3/month for up to 60 days history of motion activated recordings. If you don't pay you get only live view or the ability to talk to someone using your smart phone.
Nest is more expensive. $5/month for 5 days of 24 hr recordings, - you can do 10 and 30 day recording plans that add more each month.
Nest in my opinion has a nicer picture and very sexy app. It records all the time.
Rings app is also very easy. My only thing about the Ring is that it can occasionally miss part of a motion activated event.
In short, Ring will be great if you want to spend less. Nest is better if you want the best in image and apps. --73.229.xxx.xx |

Hey Gal!
I don't know about NEST, just RING.
I suggest the RING 2. It's battery powered, just stick it near your door, has a great picture even in the dark. Is motion activated and you can adjust the motion reading zones.
You can talk to people at your door thru your phone and see them at the same time, no matter where you are with a wi-fi or internet signal.
Check Amazon for a used/refurbished one at a great discount.

Thank you, Andrew and BRAD, for your helpful input!
I'm leaning toward Ring 2, b/c I don't even have a doorbell -- I guess my house is from a time when people just called out a Yoohoo! --68.8.xxx.xxx |
