Hi all. One of my sfh 33 year old gas furnace is finally cooked.

Of course need to replace asap as its getting cold in the Scranton area.

Any thoughts on how much its going to cost me ?

Plumber says I need to line the chimney, new code, yada yada and will get me a price.

I'm thinking 5-7K with labor and parts.

Thanks

You don't need to line the chimney. You're close to me! Call Ace Robbins for a quote, 1-570-836-3232. They are professional as fast. I got a no heat call today around 1pm and they are already there working on it on a Sunday.

Also, I've bought boilers direct from Factory Furnace Outlet and had them shipped directly to the door of the building and paid a plumber to install. A lot cheaper that way. --50.107.xxx.xxx

1-570-333-2665 is another company by the name of Monk HVAC. I've never used them, but my cousin did his college internship there and I see their vans all over.

I'd get a few bids and not mention the chimney liner to anyone and see if it comes up again. I'm pretty sure your plumber is fishing for more work. As far as I know, Pa codes were last done in 09. I've replaced several units since then and haven't lined any chimney. If it's a new code, it has to be SUPER new and I would want to see that in the book before I bit the bullet on that project.

Also, weigh your options with a high efficiency direct vent or power vent unit. Might be WAY cheaper than lining chimney to just upgrade instead. --50.107.xxx.xxx

If you put in a high efficiency boiler you can eliminate the chimney. --73.141.xxx.xxx

Thanks all.

Can't do hot air as there are radiators and no ductwork.

I'll compare prices on the high efficiency vs standard up the chimney --98.216.xx.x

Chimney liners,

flex metal pipe and a sheet metal chimney vent cap.

Small potatoes. (Cheap and Easy) --184.53.x.xx

The price of ductwork and hot air furnace may be cheaper than just replacing the boiler --72.231.xxx.xxx

The chimney liner “code” may just be a City of Scranton thing. I don’t know if you’re within city limits, but I was told the same thing. As it turned out, I got the new boiler, skipped the new liner, and the inspector never said squat about it. So I don’t know what the real answer is. --74.37.x.xxx

Slant fin has reasonably priced gas boilers. Victory series with sealed combustion can be vented directly through the wall where the chimney is not required as the boiler is power vented. If a hot water tank is required then a indirect hot water tank can be used where the boiler heats the hot water tank. Check out the Slant Fin website about different types of gas boilers. To size the boiler then look at Btu output name plate on the existing gas boiler. Lining the chimney just adds to cost where power vented gas boilers do not need a chimney. It is matter of drilling a hole through the wall then installing the venting from the boiler to the outside wall. --147.194.xxx.xx

In my area the gas company will refuse to turn on the gas if there should be a chimney liner and there is not one which can create a problem in winter, apparantly without the liner it will deteorate the bricks in the chimney --72.231.xxx.xxx

I dito Ken NY. Just today my handyman pulled out a 5 gal bucket of sand/dirt etc in my chimney. No heat call yesterday. Turns out the unit shut down due to over heat. (safefty mechanism worked nice). Turns out I need a liner. My HVAC guy says a liner is needed anytime the chimney was used with oil and you switch to gas. I'm buying the liner at a local supplier and doing it myself. Supplies should run about $300. Most co.'s charge $1500 to do a liner. But todays scare was enough for me to put in new liners in all my places. --174.59.xxx.xx
