'Simply not flushable': Thousands of pounds of wipes clog sewer system

CHARLESTON, S.C. —

Unbelievable images out of South Carolina show how wipes can wreak havoc on a sewer system.

WCSC reports baby wipes clogged a series of large pumps last week at the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Charleston.

"...we sent divers 80-90 feet deep into the wet well/raw sewage to search in complete darkness with their hands to find and identify the obstruction. As we expected, they came up with these large masses of wipes in their first two loads, with more to come," Charleston Water tweeted.

Crews worked 24/7 to get those wipes out of the system. Three days later, the pumps were back to normal. WCIV reports thousands of pounds of baby wipes were collected.

One official told the Charleston Post and Courier that other items like tampons, string, hair and makeup pads contributed to the fatberg of baby wipes, oil, fat and grease, but wipes are a huge portion of the problem.

The company shared other pictures of blackened masses created by "flushable wipes." --68.50.xxx.xxx

My lease is clear and highlighted "Wet wipes labeled FLUSHABLE are NOT flushable and will clog your toilet, giving you an ugly brown overflow."

Someone I know had the lowest house on a hill so when the city sewer system backed up due to blockages, their basement got flooded destroying everything. They traced back the offenders and sued the City and the person responsible (had a elderly care facility out of their house and provided wipes instead of toilet paper). My friends lost their law suit. Why? Because they didn't have a back-up prevention value in their basement floor drain. $40,000 in lost collectibles gone. --47.156.xx.xx

From my state. I posted that one on my social media page. The pictures are graphic. The newspaper said they did us a favor and posted low resolution pictures. LOL

"Flushable wipes" manufacturers should get sued for false advertising. Why should taxpayers and landlords have to pay for their lies?

I had a set of tenants who used them and clogged the line a couple times, once I found out what it was that clogged it, I told them next one they pay for. It never happened again. --184.102.xxx.xxx

Those divers hopefully triple protection Wetsuit then another protective suit then the drysuit.

AND I SURE HOPE they were paid 10 times their normal fee to dive into that HAZMAT environment.

It is easy to find workers willing to do this type of work. I had a sewage leak in a small space in a dirt basement years ago - time for the meth heads to the rescue! For $20 per hour, meth heads will swim thru gooey smelly muck to fix sewage leaks! Meth heads work hard - you just have to stand over them and be the "Brain" that they burned out years ago. --174.65.xx.xx

Brad, thank you so very much for having shared the story and similar ones in the past. A few years ago, I put your clause in my lease after you noted yet another problem with wipes. A tenant's wife showed up after I had already rented a property to her husband, and it was obvious that she was pregnant. She most likely would have thrown a ton of "flushable" wipes down the toilet, so thank you again for noting how they notoriously cause massive plumbing problems. --67.188.xxx.xx
