Hello Everyone,

Just a quick question about a HP laptop I have which is about 2 years old. I have not used it in about 2 weeks and when I boot up the screen only shows the date and time. It will not let me log in with my passwords? Any solutions? Thanks

Ultimate cold boot maneuver:

Unplug, remove battery,

after 30 seconds,

re install battery,

plug power back in,

turn it back on. --184.53.x.xx

My go-to solution is always this:

1) Power off the laptop. If it won't turn off by normal means, power it off by holding the power button down for about 4 seconds. If that still doesn't power it off, then just proceed to the next step.

2) Unplug it.

3) Pull out the battery.

It should now be completely powered off, whether you were able to complete step one or not.

4) Remove any external connected devices - mice, keyboards, monitors, hard drives, etc.

5) Leave it for 30 minutes.

6) Put the battery back in

7) Plug it back in, and power it up. See if you can log in now.

By unplugging it and removing the battery and letting it sit, all the capacitors have completely drained. It should put back to a nominal boot up. If it still doesn't let you log in, I'm not sure I have any other ideas. Calling it a virus or malware seems like an easy crutch, but it's always possible.

Good luck. --174.16.xxx.xx

I see RB beat me to it. He has basically the same thing, but I usually let mine sit for a long time. 30 seconds should be enough to let the capacitors drain - I'm just overly retentive. --174.16.xxx.xx

There was an update. I always have trouble after an update. I move the mouse around and around until something shows up. Can you see the mouse pointer? I took my battery out long ago and store it in a metal pan. I don't trust lithium batteries especially when charging and recharging. The update might have been coming in while your laptop was trying to boot. --73.178.xxx.xx

I usually start by screaming at it. Then I'll pound on the keyboard a couple times. If that doesn't work slam it on the desk, that should jar the hard drive.

If it still doesn't work, unplug everything, then as hard as you can, FLING the #@$%& out the window - that'll "fix" it. Then go get a new one.

Or maybe listen to the others advice.

I call my son too! "Adam? Adam? My computer...? Adam where are you?" Usually near the refrigerator...i hear the door shut and footsteps from the kitchen... he says "step away from the computer mom"... lol... we feel your pain. We avoid doing the computer stuff then get in the mindset to knock it out and darn if there is no cooperation! --99.203.xx.xxx
