I wrote about this Goodman roof package A/C a while ago, how in 15 years I had to fix it again and again and again.
Well, today it came off the roof and bit the dust.
I had no other option but to get another Goodman to fit the restricted space. Everybody said that today's Goodman units are not the same as units from 15 years ago. Today Goodman is part of Daikin, a Japanese A/C mfg.
We will all wait and see.
3 Ton, 14 SEER, 86,000 BTU, R-410 gas, crane was needed, all in all it came to $5,000. Sold the old one to a scrap guy who hauled it away on his truck for $200. --99.59.x.xxx |

Maybe owned by off shore but the sheetmetal came from the Amana company, the coils from richardson TX, copeland compressor from anywhere. Janitrol name labeled on these boxes also. --76.188.xxx.xx |

An A/C unit is only as good as its components. Assembly is also important, but its all about the parts.
In the troubled Goodman, the Copeland compressor was excellent, but a long list of parts were not top grade. Circuit board, igniter, vacuum pump, transformer, inducer motor, blower motor, capacitor, contactor and others...they all went one by one.
I have an A/C system in each house - a must have item in my area, or you can't get rent between $2,500 to $3,000, and most of them are trouble free, giving us good service in the hottest months. Now that the lemon is gone, I am going to have some peace and quiet...until the next breakdown.
Remember to replace your air filter before it gets clogged!

BTW, the State of CA is now charging a $400 environment impact fee on every new unit sold here.
Coming soon to your state. --99.59.x.xxx |

I've got at least 50 Goodman's. Got to say have been pretty trouble free. Heat and Air systems. Parts are few: circuit boards $65.,Capacitors 10, relay 12, blower motor 80. Temp sensor is 7, glow plug is 11 oh vacuum switch is 13..
Its super easy to work on.
BUT and this is a BIG butt-- when a part has to be replaced with generics THEY DON'T last. Especially glow plug, temp sensor and outside capacitor. They're not expensive but they should last longer then out experience has shown. --99.103.xxx.xxx |

They seem to have coil problems for me.
With Heat Pumps we are just getting 9 to 12 years out of one.
And 15 years ago everyone was saying they were much improved and not the same as the old Janitrol's they replaced. --73.152.xx.xxx |

The electrical and electronic parts always go sour from lightning, if you know what a surge suppressor does it is a good investment for a rooftop unit. --76.188.xxx.xx |

The new unit has aluminum coil. --99.59.x.xxx |

Fred,
Yes I heard that also. But is it just because aluminum is cheaper. And they can use that to make it sound like they are doing something different with the coil to explain the common coil problems they have had.
Who knows, I am far from a HVAC expert.
We still have a couple guys we use. And still believe the most important maybe a good install.
But I myself feel safer with another brand and a good install.
When one goes out we use the one that can get to us the quickest. And has a good price. So it can still be Goodman. And I will only pay up to 200.00 more for a better brand.
Sometimes over the years, there has been a big difference in the prices for us.
Last one we went with York since it was only 100.00 more.

I had ugly luck with Janitrol/Goodman. I'm glad they are gone.
I would rather risk the next one up in price.

I install a lot of Goodman. I have a Goodman and a Daiken on my personal home.
Goodman is much better than it used to be. On the flip side, most of the major brands are not as good as they used to be.
Back in the day, central AC would last several decades. Now the average heat pump lasts 12 years, pretty much regardless of brand.
Several manufacturers have gone to aluminum evaporator coils. I was told by Lennox and Goodman that it was because of the new refrigerant and synthetic oils. Every brand had problems with leaking evaporators when R22 was phased out and the new refrigerant required instead. R410A runs at twice the pressures of R22.
I'm not sure that's the truthful answer... they both still use copper condenser coils.

Have an investor who has Goodman heat pumps and is constantly having problems with them.
Around here they are junk and for a good reason - they are Goodmans! --76.111.xx.xx |

I bought a little house from an investor who was facing a balloon payment and had to sell fast. He had just completed the renovation, but didn't have time to advertise and wait for a qualified buyer. It had a brand new Goodman system put in, and I got all the paperwork and warranty. That was in 2003/4 and it is still running. Place has had renters for 15yrs. Back then, all these 2/1, 700-900 sqft houses had Goodmans because they made the smallest units. The bigger units by better mftrs just had too much pull for such small sqft. This Goodman has outlasted some of the more expensive ones I'v put in--like Trane. --108.87.xx.xxx |
