We bought a refrigerator from ReStore - it's very nice and clean with no odor at all. It works well and is nice and cool, but now that it's cold and operating, there's a strong refrigerator odor in both the fridge and freezer (not food-related).
We put this in a few weeks ago while working on a house during a turnover (tenant moved after seven years). We've placed many boxes of baking soda in both the fridge and the freezer and the baking soda becomes soaking wet. So we've replaced it with dry baking soda a few times with the same result.
(We also used "Detail King Frigi Fresh" for vehicles which had no effect, but that product is really for odor-causing organisms, which are not in the fridge. It's very clean with no food remnants whatsoever. It's just completely a refrigerator odor which I'm not sure how to describe.)
The odor has diminished a little in the fridge, but is not gone, and is still especially notable near the bottom of the fridge. The odor in the freezer compartment is unabated and just the same as before treating it.
I'm considering using a Big D fogger in there though it says it is highly flammable and we would have to unplug the fridge for an unknown number of hours. We're also not sure if the fogger would have an adverse effect on the interior plastic refrigerator & freezer liners.
We're hoping for new ideas for a solution - new tenant moves in on Friday afternoon. --71.246.xxx.xxx |

Such things are why I buy new fridges. Could be something bad was stored in it. Maybe it was at a mortuary. Could be someone painted some chips in the interior or racks with spray paint. Could be the pan underneath has something in it. Could be the motor is burning out. I'm going to go with touch up paint on the inside somewhere. --73.178.xxx.xx |

Have you cleaned all the defrost lines? There might be some food in them. Especially from the freezer into the drip pan under the fridge. --68.238.xx.xxx |

A odor is not good in an empty fridge, get old clothes and pour vinegar thru the freezer drain, use the old clothes to soak up the pump overflow, then pour a half gallon of hot water thru, hopefully this clears out the stink. --76.188.xxx.xx |

Check to see if there's a water tray underneath the fridge. Sometimes they will fill up and the water will get moldy and smelly. --47.149.xx.xxx |

We stopped buying used fridges off Craig's List after buying a couple of lemons. At our age, we buy from Lowes & get them to deliver. Even get extended warranty since nothing is worth much anymore. I hate the thought of replacing 10-15 fridges in the next few years.
I don't have much to add, except checking the drain tray & cleaning it well. Maybe rewashing the interior with Awesome, and pouring a little Odo-ban in the drain tray. Leave a box of baking soda in the fridge and be prepared to replace if tenant complains. --71.51.xxx.xxx |
