How does a person tell if the surface they're painting was painted with a latex or an oil based paint? Is it true that one can't get painted successfully over the other?

Thanks!

It's been my experience that oil based can go over latex but not the other way. I have picket fences at a couple of the rentals. I used Cabots oil based at first and it's great. When I went to do the next one I got confused and the clerk was not helpful and I got the other which peeled. So I went back to the oil based and it's doing very well.

I thought lacquer was something else again and had shellac in it or something. --73.178.xxx.xx

Take some acetone and rub on it. If it softens and a little comes off on the rag it’s latex. Otherwise oil. At least that’s how they do it at the local paint store. I’ve always been told you can’t put latex over oil unless it is a primer because it won’t adhere properly. It will be prone to easily peeling if bumped or scraped. --166.137.xxx.xx

If the painted piece has a yellow tint to it, it has been painted with oil. That is caused by it's lack of lightfastness. --76.111.xx.xx

Dude22,

If oil, use a great primer made to cover oil. Then paint with latex.
