Pender County, NC has pushed the school opening date to October 10. Schools had damage in Florence. Projected cost to repair schools in the millions. Hope they start soon so the kids will be off the street. I am paying taxes for them to learn, not run the streets. Almost ran over two girls riding bicycles earlier today. School can't start soon enough for me.

I think what Bill is saying is he wishes the areas prone to suffer major devastation from hurricanes might do well to take this opportunity to think of ways to get "schools" back up and functioning quickly after said disaster has passed vs. just saying they can't go back to session because some windows in building are broken and some hallways are flooded.

With online capability the way it is, would a school be able to temporarily offer online instruction via Skype and/or YouTube lesson plans? In my district, poor old mid-western town that we are, all the kids in 3rd grade or higher have Chrome books provided by the district, basically tablets without hard drives. Most folks have home internet, and for those who don't they have free "hot spots" set up where kids can work, or maybe set up a T1 or fibre line at a local civic center, library, or National Guard armory and allow kids to come do their lessons online.

Dunno. I'm not an emergency management expert. But seems like we have options that could be explored. As it is, these kids with either a) have to go to school until the end of June or b) the district will have to get a waiver and they'll simply miss the time and education, which we've been told by every teachers' union in the country is far to valuable to waste! ;-)

We have entire universities online with over 20,000 students....what strategies could a school district copy from this model to minimize downtime? --173.20.xxx.xxx

These children are going to need all the education they can get. Even though I am 71 y/o, I got what I consider a good education and have done pretty well in life. We don't need anymore snowflakes we need men and women. --97.89.xxx.xxx

I am volunteering at my church's weekly homeschool consortium. I teach Creative Writing to 3rd-6th graders. I am SO impressed with these kids. Well behaved, smart. eager to learn. It is amazing what a group of motivated parents are doing with next to nothing in teaching resources. --98.146.xxx.xxx

They are doing mold cleanup at several schools. What else do you want them to do??

This seems so weird to me. I'm all for kids being in school, but calling them "snowflakes" because their schools are still being cleaned up AFTER A FREAKING FLOOD seems a little odd to me. Sheesh.
